Slime has been permanently banned from my house for YEARS.
So naturally, I've spent the last several weeks turning my kitchen into a slime laboratory.
Motherhood is weird. 😂
Everly turned nine recently, and all she wanted was a birthday party full of slime, boba, and sugar. And because apparently I don't know how to do anything halfway, I decided we were going to do ALL of it.
Did you know there are approximately 37,000 different kinds of slime? Okay, maybe not actually 37,000, but it certainly feels that way. There's butter slime, cloud slime, crunchy slime, slime that feels like velvet, and slime that makes noises no substance should ever make.
And somewhere between testing recipes and finding glue stuck in places it absolutely shouldn't be, I realized something.
I actually LIKE making slime.
Who knew?
Yesterday, Hazel and I spent three hours turning Fueled into a nine-year-old's dream birthday party. That little five-year-old blew up balloons, tied them, made gift bags, set tables, and worked harder than some adults I've employed.
And then she had to leave. Because it was a no-siblings party. 😂
Three hours to set up. Twenty minutes for eight girls to turn it into absolute chaos.
There was glitter everywhere, a sweets table that could give a dentist nightmares, a DIY boba bar, ramen, and a photo shoot full of ridiculous '80s poses.
And there I was, discussing ASMR, bingsu charms, and the difference between butter slime and cloud slime with a room full of preteens.
For approximately two minutes, I was the coolest adult in the room.
And I loved it.
Because that's something motherhood keeps surprising me with.
The things I never would have learned, tried, or cared about if it weren't for these kids.
I've found myself getting excited about things I didn't even know existed, simply because someone I love is excited about them.
And I think that's one of my favorite parts of being their mom.
Getting invited into their little worlds. And I hope that as their worlds get bigger, they'll keep making room for me in them.
Even when those worlds are sticky, covered in glitter, and require a surprising amount of contact solution.
This morning, Everly told me it was the best party she'd ever had.
And while I'm still recovering, I'm pretty glad we did it.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have approximately 47 containers of slime supplies to organize.
And possibly a new boba birthday party idea to work on. 🧋😉
Parents, what's something you've become weirdly knowledgeable about because of your kids? Something you never would have imagined caring about, but now you could give a whole presentation on?
P.S. Fueled will be open 8 AM–2 PM tomorrow, Monday, October 12, for the holiday! Come see us! ❤️
