Grouse Ridge Farm

Grouse Ridge Farm Living a simple, Christ centered lifestyle while encouraging others to learn the invaluable skills of self-sustainability.

Dave & Tari Lohrey (the one's behind Grouse Ridge Farm) have been closely connected to farming on a large and small scale for over thirty years; all while maintaining sustainable, organic produce for their own dinner table and a local Farmers Market. We are now retired and spend most of our time in the garden, keeping a small apiary of honey bees and milking our jersey cow. Our farm products vary

from woven textiles, organic vegetables and fruits, artisan jams and herbal salves to brown eggs, honey and beeswax items.

A week ago one of our hives swarmed. Today I was able to check my 3 hives and found this in hive one. Some may be asking, what am I looking at? These are queen cells. The old queen left with a group of bees and before she left she laid eggs in these queen cups. New queens will emerge and fight for her position as queen. I counted 13 cells total. 😳

This is watch a hatch looks like. When I checked the hives on March 16, all hives had brood. So in about two weeks from that date, I was expecting a hatch. BOOM! We have bees everywhere. Baby bees are fuzzy and stay in the hive for awhile learning how to take care of the brood. The bees that were taking care of the brood graduate into field bees, gathering pollen and nectar. Gods perfect design.

Moving toward no-till beds in the garden. This is compost we put on last fall and all I did was rake into a 30” bed, no tilling. Although we will need to do some tilling it should be less and less. The greenhouse is quickly getting crowded with seedlings but soon the snap peas will be transplanted into the new bed. The spinach has leaves as big as my hand now so I’m going to harvest some goodness. My experiment with the compost bin in the greenhouse was a success. I placed the trays of small seedlings on top of the bin on that 10 degree night and the seedlings survived. Pretty awesome
