Calling all family, friends, general acquaintances, and community members! Our farm has applied to be on the amazing show Homestead Rescue! If you are willing to take 5 minutes of your time, we would appreciate your support in nominating us as well! You can fill out the short form at ContactHomesteadRescue.com . I have attached photos for the form here to make things easy for you!
For those of you that don't know us closely, we are a husband and wife team (with a young son) that are trying to start up a homestead/farm in the Lexington, SC area. We want to live as sustainably as possible and invite our community to learn about this lifestyle, too! We hope to get our property to the point where we can offer community garden plots, classes for both kids and adults, and tours of our property to see permaculture in action. We are the proud owners of Atlantic White Cedar trees, which are a relatively rare tree species native in our area! We want to expand our plant life to include as many native species as possible, especially interesting tree varieties like PawPaws - which bear a fruit that can be eaten right off the tree or enjoyed in many other fun recipes. We hope to encourage our community to learn fun new skills like canning and breadmaking, while enjoying nature and all of its beauty.
We bought our property in May 2021 and have done a lot of hard work to try to learn the skills we want to share with others! We have acquired chickens (the gateway livestockπ
) and learned so much about companion planting and natural pest control. All of these things are in effort to reduce our dependency on the grocery store and know exactly where our food comes from. We have begun selling free-range eggs at as low of a price as we can offer, to give others the opportunity to indulge in a healthier option without the hefty price tag. Many of you know that I have had health problems since giving birth to my son in 2018. My husband and I have been trying to conceive since Harvey was born, and we have been unable to do so. I have finally been diagnosed with Hashimoto's and am on a path to wellness. I attribute much of my wellness to our lifestyle and the health improvements I have been able to make since starting our homestead. I still have a long way to go to try to get my autoimmune condition under control, but it would be downright impossible without the self-sustaining lifestyle we are working towards.
If you made it this far in the post, you are a real trooper! We all know how tough times are right now. This is an opportunity that our family would be so grateful to have. It would benefit not only us, but our greater community. Please, if you have the time, filling out a nomination application on our behalf would be appreciated more than you could possibly know. We thank each and every one of you for your love and support!β€οΈ
