Bees build new comb using wax that they produce from special glands on their abdomen. Here’s how they do it step by step:

1. Producing Wax

Worker bees aged 12–18 days have wax glands that secrete tiny flakes of wax.
• It takes eating a lot of honey (about 8 kg of honey to make 1 kg of wax).
• The wax appears as small white scales on the underside of their abdomen.

2. Shaping the Wax

Bees use their legs and mandibles (jaws) to:
• Pick up wax scales.
• Chew and soften them with saliva.
• Shape the wax into hexagonal cells.

3. Creating the Comb Structure

They cluster together to:
• Measure distances with their bodies.
• Build evenly spaced vertical sheets of comb, starting from the top and working downward

4. Using the Comb

The finished comb is used for:
• Brood cells: where eggs are laid and young bees grow.
• Pollen cells: for storing pollen.
• Honey cells: for storing nectar that will turn into honey.
