Drogo – Kangal (Male) Needs a new family
Currently located in Colorado
Drogo is an exceptionally sweet, affectionate dog with a strong guardian instinct. He has no history of bite incidents, but thats due to diligent management as he has had threats, & is absolutely capable of biting if pushed beyond his boundaries.
Drogo is resource protective, which is the most important thing to understand about him. Whether it’s something he know he is not supposed to have like a bag of chips or something more instinctual like a raccoon, he needs to be left alone while he has possession of it. That being said he does not beg for food or hover around it. He’s just opportunistic and sneaky like Yogi bear energy, except for you don’t take the food away from the bear once he has it.
Any close calls have occurred when people did not respect his space during these moments. With proper management and awareness, this is very predictable and avoidable.
He has experience in multiple environments. Drogo has worked as a livestock guardian dog and has been around horses, cattle, goats, ducks, and other animals. At the same time, he has also lived comfortably as a couch dog in a one-bedroom apartment.
Temperament-wise, he is:
* Very affectionate and loves physical affection & very gentle to cuddle
* He did not grow up with with children but with his interactions with them, he is particularly fond of girls voices
* Generally calm, with rare short bursts of play particularly with adult men before settling back down
* Not a jumper and overall very polite in the home or out.
* He likes to greet people in a pleasant non-aggressive way.
Drogo is social when properly introduced to other animals. He has lived with cats and other animals successfully when introductions are done slowly and correctly. He currently goes to dog parks without issue, but caution is always used due to his resource guarding, as that could create conflict if triggered.
He greets guests calmly and politely. However, he will shift quickly into a protective mode if he perceives genuine aggression. And he has done that at the vehicle if you come up to the vehicle kindly you could stick your hand right in the truck and pet him if you come up in a threatening way or aggressive, which has happened he will quickly turn aggressive He is a reliable & discerning guardian.
Training and handling:
* Knows basic obedience (sit, lay down)
* Walks great on a leash
* Does not tolerate forceful handling (e.g., grabbing or pulling by the collar)
* Responds best to calm, respectful direction
* Generally respects household boundaries
Other notes:
* Travels well and easily gets in and out of a vehicle
* Very respectful of fencing and boundaries
* Has shown the ability to coexist peacefully, even sharing space and food around larger animals like horses
* Wound on leg has been treated many times what’s many different modalities, it’s permanent due to the looking habit. The best it’s ever been maintained is now that he’s in a dry relatively cool climate.
Ideal home:
Drogo would do best with someone who understands guardian breeds or is willing to learn. He needs a calm, handler who respects his breed, especially around resources. With the right person, he is an incredibly loyal, loving, and steady companion. He would thrive as a shop dog or doing his job as a livestock guardian dog. I would be hesitant to have him as a house pet with anyone other than someone very experienced with this breed.
