How do you fit a legacy into one cookie?

Apparently with royal icing transfers, several shades of blue, the tiniest paintbrushes I own—and absolutely no restraint. šŸ‡¦šŸ‡·

I started this Lionel Messi tribute after the moment had technically passed. For once, I didn’t care.

I wasn’t making it to outrun the algorithm. I made it because watching that farewell reminded me that sport can do something extraordinary: bring different countries, generations and families together around one person, one team and one shared moment.

I didn’t paint the boy who left Rosario. I painted the man, the captain and the father who built a legacy while somehow remaining grounded enough to be the kind of role model I’m happy for my boys to admire.

This decorated sugar cookie began with a hand-painted royal-icing background. Then came the Messi portrait, Argentina number 10 jersey, football, gold Messi logo and individually made royal icing transfers—each tiny detail becoming part of the story.

And honestly? I’m glad I didn’t rush it.

After questioning my work more than I care to admit lately, this cookie reminded me why I love creating intricate edible art. My painting has never felt stronger, the transfers behaved themselves for once, and I finished it feeling proud.

The moment may have passed.

The legacy hasn’t.

Which detail did you notice first: the portrait, the gold logo, the number 10 or that gloriously yellow football?

One tiny cut—and suddenly my gingerbread brownstones were dressed for fall. šŸ‚

Apparently, they have a more organized seasonal wardrobe than I do.

Natural food colors used to mean searching for the right shades and occasionally settling for something a little softer than what I had imagined.

These ENCO Foods Naturals understood the assignment.

The colors were beautifully pigmented as soon as I mixed them into my royal icing—and became even richer after they had time to rest. I love being able to create saturated fall colors without reaching for artificial dyes like Red 3.

I kept some of the original green ivy visible and layered the autumn shades around it so the foliage looked as though it were naturally changing—not as though the entire brownstone woke up orange one morning. šŸ˜‚

A few details that make this tipless piping-bag technique work:

šŸ‚ Flatten the seam before cutting so both sides of the V line up.

šŸ‚ Use genuinely sharp scissors. A ragged cut creates ragged leaves—and not in the charming, windswept way.

šŸ‚ Use a smaller opening and lighter pressure for delicate leaves.

šŸ‚ Increase the opening and pressure when you want larger foliage.

šŸ‚ Pipe over a few existing green leaves instead of covering everything. That variation is what makes the fall transformation feel natural.

The V-cut creates the pointed shape and adds subtle veining without a piping tip—which is excellent news for those of us whose piping tips apparently enter another dimension whenever they are needed.

Save this for your fall cookie decorating and gingerbread-house projects. šŸƒšŸ‚

Some watches tell time. A Patek Philippe Calatrava ruins your standards. šŸ˜‚

I’ve ogled Patek Philippe watches for years, so delivering these to the dedicated showroom inside Long's Jewelers was a fairly convincing test of my ability to behave professionally.

When Long’s asked me to turn a Patek Philippe Calatrava into a set of custom cookies, my husband immediately wanted to know whether Patek might provide a sample ā€œfor reference.ā€

Nice try.

A real Patek Philippe watch case can pass through nearly 20 specialists and around 50 separate operations. My edible version may not have had a movement hidden inside, but it still needed the strap built panel by panel, tiny stitching, a painted case, the salmon-colored dial and that miniature seconds display.

I even made one extra for my cousin’s birthday—the sort of person who can recognize a Patek from across the room and will absolutely inspect every detail.

This is exactly the kind of custom cookie work I love: translating beautifully designed objects into edible art without losing the details that made them iconic in the first place.

Thank you, Long's Jewelers for trusting me with this one.

Patek Philippe, consider this my very edible love letter. šŸ¤Ž

And if a Calatrava has now mysteriously appeared on your holiday wish list, Long’s jewelers can take responsibility for that. šŸ˜‚

Now tell me: what’s sitting at the top of your holiday wish list—and should I make it edible?

I committed art forgery. One hundred times. šŸ˜‚

Would you eat the evidence—or frame it?

Nothing made from royal icing could capture the scale, texture and hand of an original work by Eddie Martinez.

But translating some of that energy into 100 miniature edible canvases for a Seaport art reception? Very much my kind of assignment.

Each little canvas began as a white royal icing transfer piped onto acetate. Once completely dry, I added the edible print directly to the icing, peeled the transfer from the acetate and attached it to the cookie.

Then repeated the whole thing 100 times.

The original belonged in the gallery.

Mine belonged at the reception. šŸŖ

Thank you BOSTON SEAPORT for letting my cookies wander into the art world, and Eddie Martinez for the incredible original inspiration.

Seeing them on Eddie’s page was pretty damn amazing.

If you have an artwork, product or brand story that deserves an edible alter ego, you know where to find me.

Apparently there are only 97 days until Christmas—so really, starting in September feels completely reasonable. šŸ˜‚šŸŽ„

Before I go anywhere near the gingerbread, I build everything in cardboard first.

It lets me test the scale, make sure the pieces actually fit together and catch the structural problems before I’ve spent several days baking walls—because discovering that your roof doesn’t fit is considerably less charming when it’s made from gingerbread. šŸ˜‚

Once the cardboard templates worked, I went all in and turned them into this edible village for Gingerbread Land—complete with snowy rooftops, glowing windows, miniature people and enough tiny architectural details to keep my engineer brain extremely happy.

Then the lights came on, and suddenly it all felt real. ✨

I’ve been thinking about turning some of my gingerbread builds into downloadable templates. Would you actually want those?

Comment TEMPLATES if I should start making them—and tell me which little cottage you’d build first.

Every May, without fail. šŸŽ
Sound on — this one’s worth it. šŸ”Š

My boys’ teachers have come to expect this little apple note cookie every year, and honestly, so have I.

From the metallic airbrushed finish to the ruffled leaves piped with a tipless bag — every detail is made with teachers in mind. šŸ’Œ

If your kids have a teacher who showed up for them this year, this one’s for them šŸ¤

Quick leaf tip:
Stiff icing + a sharp V-cut bag for those ruffled edges. Have fun with it. šŸŽ

Meringue powder: .ice

When I moved to Lexington, I found myself constantly inspired by the rich history surrounding me — especially the Minuteman statue.

A life-size bronze figure of Captain John Parker, standing his ground on April 19, 1775, leading the Lexington militia at the very start of the American Revolution.

This year marks 251 years since that moment — since he famously told his men: ā€œStand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.ā€

To this day, no one knows who fired the shot heard ā€˜round the world. But what followed changed everything.

Every year this little town of mine, brings it back to life — pre-dawn reenactments, a parade, pancake breakfasts… it’s one of those things you just have to experience.

Have you ever been to Lexington for Patriots’ Day?
