Expansion of the BUCK LOT! They are wiping it all out! If I could convince myself to drop them off to clear other peoples land as a service I’d probably actually pull in a good profit! But thinking I’m not there to know what happens to them or save them gets me everytime!
The WHY... Dairy Goats for our farm.
We have been clearing for 6 years now. Expanding fences and pasturable ground. The first 2 years we did this with equipment only, with only the allowance of stock once we cleared to expand interior temp wires. This was extremely time intensive with both physical & mechanical labor constantly as we began to change this 48 acres into managed property. We made headway with every project area and loved the beautiful views that came from it! But there was a huge problem we didn’t foresee.
Some of the land isn’t so friendly for equipment to wipe out trees or overgrowth. Maintain the cleared areas with horses... that’s a joke 😂🤷♀️! We watched areas we couldn’t expand stock to yet regrow and become once again unsightly!
For 2 years now I have grown the dairy herd, and am fighting myself on wether or not to sell kids this year. They are still at a manageable number close to 60 head, but I know it’s going to take way more once all boundary fence lines have been erected.
Choice of stock... here where this becomes a personal decision or preference.
I chose registered traceable lineage & size manageable stock to handle. Although we have a handful of lamanchas (11 at this time lol) I choose the ND’s for their personalities & easy handling when it comes to medical & routine care needs.
I chose registered bcuz I wanted a clean well cared for herd. My entire ND herd came from a single farm so I did not expose anyone to any disease or sickness.
Did I do it for milk? Not exactly in the beginning. I did it for w**d control in pastures with the horses with the option of milk as I knew absolutely nothing about goats or milking 6 years ago! But selling kids knowing they would go to market was not something I wanted to do.
Now I do it for milk bcuz God knows we hate nasty stinky store bought old tasting milk & for clearing!
This choice for our farm & our lives was one of the top 5 best choices we could have ever made for the type of ground we purchased! We will continue to clear, continue to improve the land, eat healthier by knowing where our food comes from and how it’s handled. Closer to the natural way of things!
Goats they aren’t for everyone, they aren’t for every type of ground, but for us and our 48 acres in the hollers in South Central KY, the goats are rocking it out!
