Recovering people pleasers unite!
Little devotional from this month’s newsletter that I wanted to share.
🌸🌸🌸
If I were to send out a survey asking everyone what their favorite flower is and then have to grow all of those favorites in one summer, I’d be overwhelmed. The quality of the flowers would go downhill because I’m spread too thin, the weeds would take over, my husband would be eating cocoa puffs every night because I would be so busy maintaining the garden. It just wouldn’t go well. Sure, maybe I could make it all happen, but at what cost? You do not have to grow it all.
At some point in your life have you tried to be everything for everyone?
* raises hand and nods head*
Yeah, it ultimately doesn’t work out well, does it? Trying to figure out what every person on earth wants from you and then putting the effort into catering to that need is exhausting. Quite frankly, it’s extremely unhealthy to live that way.
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (NIV)
Maybe it is the fear of not being liked, fear of abandonment or just wanting to go above and beyond for others with the mentality that you must always come last. Whichever the route to burnout may be for you, there is a better way. Here’s the answer:
Your only goal in life should be to please Christ.
Everything after that will fall into place. Literally everything.
When you study the way He lived, you discover Jesus had boundaries. He had discernment with others. He ALWAYS loved others, but He did not live by what other people thought they needed from Him.
We are nowhere near capable of living a perfect life like Jesus, but we can rest in the Word telling us that people pleasing isn’t the goal. Let’s start there.
