Once numerous, and famed as offering the best variety and quality apples, the orchards of Casey County have dwindled, to effectively consist of one remaining commercial-scale orchard. Sandusky’s at 488 Sharp Road (off Hwy 49) near Liberty.

Casey County Apples still have a reputation as a special “brand” of fruit. The County still hosts the Casey County Apple Festival, which holds the claim of “The Worlds Largest Apple Pie” every September. Although Apple Festival seems more of a social event than the celebration of the apple harvest that it used to be, we still celebrate it as an opportunity to introduce the visitors from around the world to the orchard legacy that Ottis and Lois Sandusky both cherished, and toiled, as their own.

Lois Murphy Sandusky is still very active in the day-to-day orchard operations, and cheerfully greets friends and visitors with her loving smile, conversation and wit at harvest time. Often the visitors say they have travelled a great many miles to “buy a bag of real apples”. It is widely known though, that the orchard visit and the welcoming smile they recieve are a big part of the reason they stop in.

Jo Ann Sandusky-Pratt, the youngest of three daughters, has taken to task the future of Sandusky’s Apples and Ginseng. For her, it is a year-round labor of love that keeps her motivated to not only keep the orchard viable, but to grow the orchard in size and scope. Combining time-tested horticulture practices, people-skills and integrity, with the science, business ethics and marketing knowledge of the 21st century, she keeps it moving forward. The fact that she also has her mother’s friendly, welcoming smile and cheerful demeanor is a huge reason that it is not just moving forward, but has become a legacy both respected and enjoyed by customers, peers and friends.

The same welcoming atmoshere that makes apple harvest-time special to so many also applies to another aspect of business at the orchard in the fall of the year. Ginseng, which occurs naturally and grows in the wild, has a much sought-after root because it is among the most popular herbal remedies worldwide. Legal harvest, or “ginseng digging” has been a supplemental income source for those in our region for many years, and has helped Kentucky folks to “make it through the winter”, especially when lean times have hit an agricultural community.

The same friendliness and integrity that benefits the apple sales is also a key ingredient in ginseng purchasing and trade. Sandusky’s strives to “ always pay the diggers an honest price at an honest weight” just as Ottis instructed. Any discrepencies are dealt with immediately, showing respect to the seller, and always in a kind and understanding manner. Market prices are paid according demand for ginseng in the local zone.
