The Prairie this year has been 💥✨🤩💫!!

Sadly, less than 0.01% of original prairie remains in Illinois. The rich soil has been favored for farm fields for more than a century. That along with land development has drastically reduced the native and natural space there once was.

After my return home from college, I fell in love with the prairie and am lucky to live in area that is interested in protecting a lot of it. The flora and landscape is really very unique to the Midwest and I took an oath with myself to do what I can to preserve and protect it.

We have had people in the past reach out about native prairie seedlings. The thing about starting these plants from seed is that it takes time, because many seeds need a stratification period, or exposure to cold, before they can germinate. Some need to be stratified for a period of 90 days!

With all this in mind, we are planning on offering a Native seedling CSA where we will grow these plants specifically for you! We will open up the CSA in the early Fall so we can get seed orders placed. A quick survey on your space will help us figure out what plants will do best depending on your sun, soil, and water saturation.

If you are interested in joining, please send us a message! Once the CSA opens up, we will notify everyone through our email list! Let’s do what we can together to create pockets of natives for pollinators and the future of prairies!

Happy Leo Season! I can’t believe August is already here. The fields are looking as lush and bountiful as ever.

Zinnias are bushed out into full bloom, it’s a chore keeping up with them and I am dead heading at every opportunity that I get.

The Dahlias have so many buds on them, flowers are opening, and I am keeping an eye out for any Japanese beetles who love to munch on their dainty petals.

The tomatoes have hit their jungle phase, spilling over the twine, and heavy with green fruit. They are also under attack by green horn worms, it’s a daily game of hide and seek to find them and pull them off.

Sunflowers are abound, the spring flowers have faded and gone to seed. Peppers will be ripening faster than we can pick them. Onions and garlic are drying in the greenhouse and the winter squash is still growing and ripening.

We have hit the precipice of the growing season, soon the leaves on the plants will start to die back, disease will inevitably set in, flowers will start going to seed, and the harvest will be turned into canned jars and frozen bags for winter meals.

The hard work really pays off and the month of August is proof of that!

Hello friends! It has been awhile since I’ve shared in this space. I wanted to give an update on what you can expect from Sol-Ful Blooms this coming year.

As most of you know, we welcomed our baby girl into the world this past October. It has been such a joy and a gift to have her here. It will also change our focus for the growing season this year so we can focus on growing our most precious flower of all.

Flower CSA: I started our first flower CSA in 2019 and I hope to continue it this year. This might look like bi-weekly or monthly subscription options in the summer. I promise to finalize details in February-March. 💐

Plant sale: this year will be our 3rd year offering plant starts for your gardens, probably with smaller offerings this year but you will still be able to shop online for your favorite tomatoes, peppers, and flower starts. 🌱

You-pick: I had fun meeting more of you during our you picks last year and will continue to do them again. While we plan to cut down on flower variety we will make up in quantity of our favorite annuals like zinnias, sunflowers, and dahlias. 🤩

Perennials: We really want to focus hard on our perennial fields this year. They usually get put to the bottom of the list over the busy annuals so we plan to really focus on weeding and maintenance as well as prepping space for more like daffodils, more peonies, and other flowers and vegetables. 🪻

Thank you if you read this far into this post. I just felt like I needed to explain where our heads are at for the season coming up as it will look and feel very different for us. We are always growing and evolving over here, thank you for sharing this journey with us whether it is virtually or in real life! 💕

We have been taking some much needed R&R over here with our baby girl, Dara. She we will be 1 month old next week! I cannot believe how much she has grown in such a short time, I am really trying to savor all these special moments with her.

We plan to continue our little hiatus here for now as we adjust to life with a newborn. Any offerings we have available I will share with you in our news letter and here on insta.

We have tons of butternut squash and onions available if anyone is interested in stocking up for the holiday, shoot me a message!

I don’t have plans for holiday wreaths this year but will soon start playing with the dried flowers and having decor available for those.

We wish everyone a care free and happy holidays with your friends and family! We will be back soon!

Our Story

At Sol-Ful Blooms we organically produce seasonal cut flowers, vegetables, and herbs to bring the sight, scent, and flavor of the season to your family dinner table. Vegetables and flowers are sold through weekly CSA shares and a farmer’s market. Managing our healthy soil is the key component of our growing practices that allows us to produce nutrient dense food and preserve the freshness of the season for the local food shed. Floral designs are crafted from the bountiful blooms grown on the farm and foraged from preserved land down the road in Libertyville. Arrangements are available at market, through a CSA share, and weddings/events. Feel free to contact us with any questions about becoming a part of the farm!

We are committed to the lifelong process of education and this journey is an effort to reconnect people back to their land through holistic ideals, practices, and mindfulness on how we can help to contribute to and transform the local food system.
