It’s almost back-to-school time already! We can’t believe how quickly summer flew by!
We know that once school starts, our kids are exposed to so many different things. While we can’t control everything they come in contact with, we can help support their bodies through the foundations we CAN control.
🥦FOOD MATTERS
What we feed our children plays an important role in how they feel and function. Food can impact their energy, mood, behavior, concentration, digestion, and immune health.
If your child seems to be constantly sick or struggling to bounce back from every virus that comes around, take a look at their diet. One simple place to start is by limiting added sugar/ prepackaged foods and focusing on whole, nourishing foods. It will make a difference!!!
Sugar is everywhere, and it can be easy for kids to consume more than we realize especially through drinks and prepackaged foods. The current recommendation is that children ages 2–18 have NO more than 25 grams of added sugar per day. Pay attention to drinks! They can add up quickly.
And no, this doesn’t mean our kids can never have treats. My kids absolutely have treats and are not deprived! We simply do not overdo it, and I truly believe those everyday choices make a difference.
💧 HYDRATION IS KEY
Once school starts, we may not always have control over what our children eat and drink while they’re away from home. That’s why educating our kids is so important. They may act like they aren’t listening but trust me they are absorbing more than you think!
Encourage them to drink water throughout the day. Proper hydration supports digestion, regular bowel movements, nutrient absorption, energy, and overall health.
Fill their water bottle every morning and let them pick out a fun one they actually enjoy carrying and drinking from!
😴 DON’T UNDERESTIMATE SLEEP
Sleep is especially important for growing children. Their bodies need adequate rest for healthy development, immune function, emotional regulation, brain function, and recovery.
When children consistently don’t get enough sleep, it can affect their mood, concentration, cravings, gut health, and ability to fight off illness.
As tempting as it is to squeeze in "just one more thing” at night, sleep needs to be a priority.
🌿 SUPPORTIVE SUPPLEMENTS
Supplements can also be helpful, especially during the months when sickness seems to be everywhere. But remember you cannot out-supplement poor nutrition, lack of sleep, dehydration, or other foundational habits. Supplements should support the foundation, not replace it.
Always check with your child’s healthcare provider before starting a new supplement.
In our family, we personally like using elderberry and bee propolis during the colder months, but there are many options available depending on your child’s individual needs.
As we head into another school year, remember: You don’t have to do everything perfectly. Focus on the foundations.
Small, consistent habits can make a BIG difference in helping our kids feel their best all year long.
Hope your children have a great first day of school!!
