A dark orange yolk doesn’t automatically mean a better egg! Really…
Commercial hens can be kept indoors, fed low-quality diets, and still produce dark yolks simply by adding things like paprika, marigold extract, or other color-enhancing ingredients to their feed. 🤯 (sounds like cheating to me!)
BUT on the flip side, pasture-raised hens may naturally lay eggs with yolks that VARY in COLOR throughout the year depending on the season, what’s growing in the yard, and what types of bugs are abundant that time of year! 👍🏼👍🏼
Yolk color tells you what a chicken ate—not necessarily how she was raised or the quality of feed she is eating! (Kinda like painting a brown banana yellow, it’s not actually yellow. But we will pretend 🥲)
If you want to know the QUALITY of an egg, ask about the bird’s diet, living conditions, and access to pasture—not just the color of the yolk. 😃 No, really!
