To the lady at the Gastonia Farmers Market today who walked halfway down the aisle and loudly proclaimed that you weren’t going any farther because it was “just junk” and you didn’t need any more of it…

Let me offer a different perspective.

Many of the vendors you dismissed spend countless hours making, growing, baking, creating, and preparing the products they bring to market each week. For many, this isn’t a hobby—it’s a way to supplement their income, support their families, and share their talents with the community.

What may seem like “junk” to you may be the perfect birthday gift for someone else, a thoughtful item for a friend going through a difficult time, or simply something that brings another person joy. Many of these vendors have loyal customers who return week after week because they value what these small businesses offer.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there is no need to loudly belittle the work and effort of others. Kindness costs nothing, and a little respect goes a long way.

And remember what many of us were taught growing up: If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Support small businesses. Support local farmers. Support makers and artisans. A community is stronger when we lift one another up instead of tearing each other down. ❤️🌱🛍️
