Heavens Blessins Jerseys What started out as 4-H projects decades ago has become a dream come true. God has blessed us with a wonderful herd of registered jerseys.

Heavens Blessins Jerseys is owned and operated by the Derr family. Located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, we farm the hills. We are proud to be BST free. Everything we accomplish is through the gifts that God gives us along with the knowledge and advice of the people God places in our lives.

Aw the sound, look and feel of rain! We have been in such bad need of rain and the 7 tenths we got on Monday was such a blessing. We have been so busy and have so much to be thankful for. Here’s to praying for more rain!

What a surprise we got this afternoon when we received an email from the Jersey Association telling us that our herd ranked in the top 10 in the nation (for our herd size) in all 3 categories. Every day it amazes us how well our cows milk. The guys work so hard at harvesting high quality crops to the best of their ability. We try to stay open to opinions of other people in our industry because we never know when a fresh, different idea may work in our herd. But most importantly, we thank God for everyone and everything He has placed in our lives that has helped get our cows to this level. As we wonder just how this year will unfold with the high expense costs, this reminds us that we are so blessed!!!!

Yep, it does look pretty. For those who don’t take care of animals for a living, they get the luxury of going inside and staying cozy and warm. But farmers with livestock bundle up in layers and go out to take care of their animals. Making sure they are well bedded, the water is not frozen and they have plenty to eat. Animals use more calories when they are staying warm! Taking time for close inspection of their behaviors and observing possible health concerns is always time well spent in this cold weather. Of course, paying close attention to the cows ready to calf is a must so we can be there ASAP when a calf is born. Yep, it’s more work than most people realize but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We are so fortunate to do what we love!!!

Meet some of our 2-year olds that make milking cows fun. We start with Allie who scored 86, is project for over 18500, still milking almost 60 pounds and is due for dry off soon. Then, there is Flirt who scored 85 and is projected for over 22000. Her family has been in our herd for generations. Finally, we have sweet Ellie. One of the nicest cows in the barn to work with. She is also scored at 85 and projected for almost 17000. It’s been fun watching our year’s 2-year olds improve over the previous year. We have so many hopes for this new year. Time will tell what God has in store for us.

It was a busy day! The guys cleaned out pens and prepped them for the winter. All the preparations are completed to allow us to spend precious time with our family tomorrow. What a great reason to celebrate- the birth of Jesus. As you open your gifts tomorrow and enjoy your families, take some time and thank God for the gift of His son and the salvation He brought.

After the temperature today, it's hard to remember that the first snowball fight on the farm occurred weeks ago. Blake won this round but it won't be long till little brother, Luke, will win!

Coming in from the barn tonight, we saw this bald eagle in a tree up by the bred heifer barn(picture 1). So I went for a walk in attempt to get a closer picture. When I got up to the heifer barn, I was totally surprised by a young eagle as it took off from the ground. I was completely unaware that it was there until I heard its wings flapping as it took off. I turned my attention back to the mature eagle and was able to get some shots of it sitting and flying. Pleased with my attempts at getting pictures, I walked back to the house. I no more got into the house and looked out the window to see the young eagle was in the same tree. So, with sneakers back on, I went for a walk...again. The young eagle was much more cooperative(picture 4). These beautiful birds are so amazing. Just one of God’s many great creatures.

So how many guys does it take to fix an elevator? This was last week when we brought in more small square bales. The rain has made it interesting when trying to get hay dry, but we have managed to get over 8000 small squares done with 40 acres of 2nd cutting grass hay to finish. We have well over 1200 wrapped round bales done with most of the third cutting done. The girls are milking well and heifer calves fill the hutches. This summer has been one of our busiest ones ever and we are loving every minute. It is amazing what we take for granted. After last year’s dry weather, we are appreciating the rain and warmth of this summer. It is always amazing to see God’s plan in action.

Aaawww... what a blessing the rain is! If you look closely in the picture, you will see the rain ops in las evening’s storm. As you can tell by the round bale pile, the guys have been busy. There is yet another pile of bales in a different location; not to mention the 2000 small square bales and haylage that has been put away. All this and second cutting is about to begin. It will be 28 days - tomorrow - since we started harvesting hay in the various forms. Let the fun begin - round 2!

Blake offers one our our new excellent cows a handful of triticale. Hiccup happens to belong to Blake. They even share a birthday. Matt’s children got the first heifer calf born closest to the day they were born. Boy, did Blake get lucky! Hiccup is not only a looker, she milks well as this is the second consecutive lactation that she will make over 21000 pounds of milk. Her daughter, Hunter, scored 81 and is projected for over 20000 pounds. How many 6 year old boys can say they own an excellent cow. What a foundation cow for him.

Next year, the field on the left will look like the field on the right. The new seeding is coming along nicely considering this picture was taken before the current streak of warm weather. It’s amazing how God works. Today started off with one man down needing to get to the chiropractor, an excellent cow down in the dry cow pen, haylage to get in and cows to be classified. Tonight we have the man on the mend, the cow up having calved and in the milking barn, the haylage in the silo or in round bales and the cows classified. We did well with the classification - 2 new excellent, 2 raised to 91 and a lot of 1st calf heifers in the 80’s. God’s plans are better than ours!

Pedicure anyone? Yesterday the milk cows had a spa day - they got their hooves trimmed. A necessity to have happy healthy cows. Happy and healthy they are! The most recent test day results are in and they are milking well. We had 36 cows over 70 pounds. Sassy (with 97 lbs), Piper (with 93 lbs) and Brandy (with 91 lbs) led the way. Flynn, a 2-year old, wrapped up her 1st lactation with 21041 lbs of milk at 280 days. Joy, fresh at 2-0 had 79 lbs and is projected at 20846 at 4.9 fat. Then there is excellent Twix who had 69 pounds and is ready for dry off. She is projected for 22775 at 4.9. The year has definitely been crazy and our cows milking like this just adds to the craziness. We are enjoying the awesome weather and using every possible moment to get work done before April showers begin. We are so blessed to be doing what we love.
