As we continue to remain several good drying days from fieldwork starting/resuming the attached picture can provide a guide for prioritizing planting hybrids as we get later into May. This is not based strictly on maturity ratings or GDUs to blacklayer (corn requires about 6.8 fewer GDUs per day of delayed planting after May 1), this chart also takes into account experiences with later planting the last several years. The guiding goal here is to maximize yield while allowing enough time for maturity and some drydown under “average” growing conditions.
Results will vary each growing season, but P1383AM won a S. Henry Co. plot on Hoytville soils planted May 30 last year at 256bu/A, 19.2%. P10811AM and P09312V were close behind. These products were about 1.5pts wetter and 25-30bu/A more yield than the 104/105 maturity products in the plot.
Every situation is unique, if you rely on the elevator to dry corn we may need to shift recommendations a little earlier.
