I just brought my newest additions out to the coop with my bym layers! If you have a minute to sit with me, I'll show you how we make their transition a little more smooth. 😁
I have developed my own technique (although I'm sure others have used similar methods, as it is very effective)
I use an "island coop" which is a secure enclosure set up inside the main coop where young chickens, or any new arrivals, can live temporarily while the established flock moves freely around them.
The birds can see, hear, smell, and interact through the fencing, but the younger chickens stay protected from pecking or excessive bullying. It gives everyone time to adjust before full integration.
We will keep them in the Island pen for 1-2 weeks. Or until both groups of chickens seem comfortable with their new family members.
As for the older birds, I want them to be mostly ignoring the newcomers. I don't want to see them pecking through the wire or obsessing over the new "chicks".
As for the chicks, we want them to be confident and not panic when older chickens come near.
We will do some trial runs once they all seem more comfortable with each other.
Once I'm happy with the trials, I will remove the island coop and just keep a closer eye on everybody for a while 😁
