I'm often asked by my family and friends, what do Christmas tree farmers do in the winter?

A lot of people assume we go into torpor — you know, like bears, a state of physical or mental inactivity; lethargy...

But despite popular belief… we do not hibernate.

Winter actually looks like this:

Go to “tree camp” (also known as the Minnesota Christmas Tree Association conference 🌲😆)

Order thousands of baby trees like we’re investing in the world’s slowest-maturing asset

Fix everything that December tried to break

Debate fertilizer and spacing like it’s fantasy football

Do paperwork that somehow multiplies when the snow falls

Walk snowy fields checking on trees that are quietly growing under the blanket of winter

Christmas trees take 7–10 years to grow.
So while the farm may look peaceful and still…

We’re actually working on Christmas 2036.

And maybe a little bit of torpor here,

As we wrap up our final day of the season (we're open until 5pm), we just want to say thank you to everyone who came out to experience the magic of our little Christmas tree farm and support us in this adventure.

This truly was a wonderful and magical year — from our very first customer hug (my heart grew three sizes that day 😊), to the customer-provided baked goods, the joyful emails showing off beautifully decorated trees, and the countless kind reviews and notes sharing how much you appreciated our family and staff (we agree they are wonderful!). We feel incredibly lucky for the support and encouragement you’ve shown us.

We were thrilled to have 45 families cut their own tree this year, and we are so grateful for your patience as our trees continue to mature. We can’t wait to grow with you — and we’re excited to share that we’re on track to have around 500 cut-your-own trees next year!

A huge thank you as well to my cousins for creating such beautiful, artisan wreaths — they were truly special and so appreciated. And a very special shout-out and thank you to Mark Ahlers and his Irondale High School shop class for creating what can only be described as an out-of-this-world, cedar-lined, heated porta-potty — a true crowd favorite and something we’re incredibly grateful for.

And to our amazing customers: because of you, we were able to raise over $9,500 for four amazing local elementary schools — Blue Heron, Lino Lakes, Rice Lake, and Turtle Lake. Next year, we’re excited to raise even more and to include Centerville Elementary School’s PTA as well.

From our family to yours, thank you for being part of our story this season. We are already looking forward to welcoming you back next year and continuing to grow this little farm together. ❤️🎄

We know it’s been cold out, and we want to make sure everyone still has the chance to bring home a real Christmas tree, wreath, or fresh greenery before the holidays.

We’ll be open Wednesday–Sunday, December 21, from 9am–5pm, while trees last.
We continue to have a nice selection of over 160 pre-cut trees on display with 120+ of those in the 8-10+ foot range, along with wreaths, garland, porch pots, and other fresh greenery to finish off your holiday decorating.

We are a full service family Christmas tree farm and will give the tree a fresh cut, shake it, bale it, and tie it to your vehicle while you enjoy the complementary hot chocolate, selfie stations and campfire. As always, we truly appreciate the community’s support of our little family-owned tree farm.

We hope to see you out at the farm before the trees are gone!

As we head into a chilly weekend, we’re here to help make your Christmas tree trip quick and easy so you can enjoy the time spent setting it up and decorating! 🎄❄️

We have a great selection of over 200 fresh pre-cut trees from 6–10 feet, including a large number of 8–10 foot Balsams and Frasers.

Between our free hot chocolate, cozy fire, and support of local elementary schools, we also know that cold weather calls for efficiency. One family recently grabbed their perfect tree between hockey games — in under 10 minutes!

With sub-zero temps expected tomorrow, we might be setting a new farm record. Think you can beat it?

We have received a lot of calls wondering if we are open, and yes, we are! It’s a beautiful day out at the Christmas tree farm and we should be open through at least Sunday. The fire is going, carols are playing, and hot cocoa is ready!

We have a great selection of trees with 240 on display to choose from, ranging from 6-11 ft. 

As always for this year, 6.7% of all sales go to four local elementary school PTAs (split equally among Blue Heron, Lino Lakes, Rice Lake, and Turtle Lake Elementary School PTAs ), and your support has helped raise over $8,700 (almost $2,200 per school) to support the little ones this year!

It’s a winter wonderland out at the Kavan Family Christmas Tree Farm!

As we head into the weekend, we have an excellent selection of over 550 fresh pre-cut trees from other local farms — including 89 nine-foot trees, 45 ten-foot trees, and a fantastic variety of 6–8 foot trees.

You’ll find Fraser, Balsam, Canaan, White Pine, and Spruce in heights from 6 to 10 feet, along with a huge assortment of wreaths, garland, porch pots, spruce tops, and fresh greenery.

As always, enjoy the festive atmosphere with free hot chocolate, a cozy fire, and the joy of knowing that 6.7% of all sales support our great local elementary schools.

Thank you to everyone who braved the snow yesterday to visit the farm! It’s been a wonderful season, and we’ve loved seeing so many familiar faces and welcoming new visitors to our little Christmas tree farm.

We still have an excellent supply of over 700 fresh pre-cut trees (6–11 ft) — including 100+ beautiful 9- and 10-foot trees — plus lots of wreaths, garland, porch pot supplies, and greens to choose from.

The weather looks great today — we’re looking forward to another fun day on the farm!

It’s definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas! It’s a little chilly out and a great day for a fresh pre-cut Christmas tree. Please be careful driving as the roads are icy, and we will be here to welcome you with warm hot chocolate, a cozy fire, and a fresh pre-cut tree, from 9 to 5 today.

It was a beautiful day yesterday for the opening of the Kavan Family Christmas Tree Farm, and we’re grateful that John Lauristen from WCCO came out to share our story. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and helped make it such a wonderful first day.

It’s shaping up to be a gorgeous weekend, and we’re excited to welcome more folks to experience the magic of the farm here in Lino Lakes.

It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but as soon as Kavan Christmas Tree Farm in Lino Lakes opened Friday morning, customers were ready.
