Let me paint you a picture: you’re walking through a thick blanket of leaves that completely cover the ground.. crunching your way back to the house. You’re bundled up in your cozy sweater with your warm cup of coffee. Keeping warm from the crisp, cool air. It’s autumn. Everyone’s favorite season.

Just kidding. You’re in TEXAS, and it’s still 85 degrees. Because fall is only a fable you’ve heard from people in the North East. You’re drinking iced coffee and probably wearing shorts and flip flops. But hey, it’s fun to pretend right?!

Here in Texas we don’t get much of a fall season. The leaves turn from green to brown just as quick as they’re falling to the ground. But there is a short timeframe where you can find these orange and crimson colored leaves.. and this is one of the best parts of fall here in Texas. Pretending and hoping and wishing for the cool temperatures but rarely getting them. Multiple outfit changes in a day because by 9AM your sweater is making you sweat.

Getting into the 30’s tonight and rain all week but the ladies are still feeling generous 🤍

I finally purchased a heated poultry waterer so I’m going to go get that set up and see how the girls like it for these near-freezing temps!

Sometimes I wish we lived on a piece of property similar to what my grandparents have. Wide, flat and open. While that has its perks when you want to catch a good sunset/sunrise, the trees in our landscape are part of what makes it beautiful.. and keeps the electric bill cheap! There haven’t been a ton of watercolor skies lately, so I’m thankful for the nights like this when I can catch a glimpse of a beautiful painting of clouds.

Fall Harvest 2020 was one for the books! With the help of some friends and family we were able to process 55 chickens and 7 turkeys. While it was still quite a bit of work even with the extra hands, it went smoothly and we will all be eating REALLY GOOD now that it’s all said and done.

Our last attempt at raising turkeys was in 2018, we started with 16 and ended with ZERO. Not fun!! A week before Thanksgiving and two days before harvest date, they got spooked by an intruder in the pen and F.L.E.W. A.W.A.Y! Imagine... raising birds for 6 months.. for nothing. Lol. It turned into a good story to tell; but a first year farming fail for sure LOL! This year we successfully harvested our 7 turkeys and are extremely proud of the turnout. The average weight was around 13lbs but this was the monster weighing in at 17.5lbs! Needless to say we won’t be needing any meat for awhile!

It’s a difficult concept for some to grasp-the idea of raising with the intentions to eat. Once you’ve done it, there is just something special and reassuring about knowing where your food comes from. Our birds live full, free, clean and healthy lives right up until it is time for them to provide for us as food. It’s definitely a lot more work but the reward can’t be quantified when you know the quality and history of what you’re putting into your body. I would encourage any of you who are able to buy local! Find small markets, local farms/butchers, etc. and buy quality meat for yourself and your family. It is more $$$ but it’s SUCH a good feeling knowing that your food was raised humanely and lovingly 💕

Yes, these are all chicken eggs! Before I had chickens I had no idea how many variations in sizes, colors and (yeah!) even shapes sometimes lol. The blue egg is the smallest size we get and this MONSTER of a tan egg is just... unbelievable. It is longer than my longest finger. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a double yolk, but we’ll have to wait to crack it and find out!

Today’s feature: our next round of meat birds! This flock has been awesome, because they’ve really embraced the pasture living and completely left my flower beds, porch and patio alone unlike my egg layers! The grass hopper management this year has been UNREAL and I am loving it!
🐓
My grandmother gave us this chicken feeder last summer when we went to visit, and it’s the one her and my grandpa used back when they raised chickens. It’s been really special to be able to incorporate some of the things they used to use around our small farm 🤍
