This is what February smells like. Woodsmoke and chainsaws and wood chips and cold sunshine. John has been getting this part of the property line cleaned up so fence can go in soon! We much prefer to do this kind of work during the winter so there are no leaves to contend with and it’s a much less sweaty venture than in the summer.

You’ll have to check my math. 🤔 Today’s workout is creating small avalanches to increase our solar power generation. John rigged a push broom and a big piece of conduit to make a rake of sorts and it’s working! I already finished one array. I guess the good part is that the more snow I pull down, the more I have to stand on and the higher I can reach. I’m certainly not cold! 😆

John and Ez are bustling back and forth checking generators, feeding the wood stove, and making sure equipment is ready. Inside, Fiona and I are prepping comfort food to keep us warm and satisfied. Back out in a few to check on the livestock, and then we wait to see whether Winter Storm Fern delivers on the hype. Stay warm, friends!

Copy and Paste are two of my favorite ewes in the flock. (Shhhh.. don’t tell the others.) To be honest, though, I really do love all of our sheep, and they are extra fluffy and fuzzy right now, which makes them extra cute. I never tire of watching how genetics plays out over successive generations—check out the matching color pattern around the eyes of this mother/daughter duo! Our sheep are St. Croix crossed with Katahdin, so we get some fun color in the mix. I’ve got more cute photos of our wintery flock and herd coming up in the next podcast/video episode—it’ll be ready in the next few days, once I warm up from the frosty temps outside!

Wood stove-proofed hamburger buns for the win last night! The burger combination of ground lamb and sweet Italian chicken sausage is a favorite around here. Let me know if you want to try it for yourself—CLE folks, I’ll be on the west side on Wednesday if you want me to deliver! https://www.laughlinhighlandsfarm.com/collections/party-packs Photo credit goes to Ezra!

Blizzard raging outside, wood stove working hard to dry boots and gloves and proof dough for tonight’s hamburger buns. LHF farm-raised lamb and Italian sausage burgers on deck. I can hear the kids in the basement running around with nerf guns and hobby horses playing cowboy and sheriff while I keep watch on the livestock munching on their hay in the pastures. Stay cozy, friends!

This week’s farm update starts with a skillet, a little too much smoke, and a visit from the volunteer fire department. Yes — all because of bacon.

What began as a peaceful farm breakfast turned into one of those small-town moments we’ll never forget: neighbors, laughter, and a reminder that community means showing up — even when the emergency is breakfast gone wrong.

This week, we hit a major milestone — over 260 chickens and 30+ turkeys processed and ready for the freezer! The barn is quieter, the fields are calmer, and I’m reflecting on what it means to manage time, stress, and sanity during the busiest weeks of farm life.
