Some of you might know Abigail from the Canton Farmers Market, but something you might not know is that she is working on a specialty herb garden at Chanticleer this year! After taking a course on herbalism this past year, she’s planted out a plot of medicinal and culinary herbs that’s shaping up to be a wonderful addition to the farm. And she had some wonderful help with watering from her son!

Tulips are up! This year we tried planting some bulbs in one of our high tunnels, and we’ve been delighted by the results. They’re in the hut now, and we’ll also bring some to the this Saturday. Signs of spring are all around on this vernal equinox! Over 125 new chicks arrived this week (including a few goslings and ducklings), the earliest of crocuses are popping up, our greenhouse benches are filling up with starts, and we’re finally finishing up our apple pruning projects. March has been quite temperamental, but the growing season is just over the horizon.

For the past couple of weeks we’ve been flipping beds and getting our first rounds of spring crops planted. After that false spring weather, it’s hard not to anxiously anticipate the warmer temps on the horizon! Here, you can see Stephen flame weeding one of the beds, our first beet planting of the season, and the broad fork breaking up some compaction in the soil.
