Merkts Cheese Spread got its name from the original Merkts man, George Merkt. In the 1950s, he and his wife set up a small cheese and sausage shop near Salem, Wisconsin. That independent shop was the beginning of Merkts Cheese Company. In 1982, Merkts Cheese Company moved to Bristol, Wisconsin, where a variety of quality Merkts Cheese Spreads and other products were produced

. Bel Brands USA purchased the brand in 2002, and from there Merkts continued to grow into the fan favorite you know today.
