Wicked Ginger Boer Goats

Wicked Ginger Boer Goats Boer Goat Farm About 3 years ago now Mark got the bright idea that we should get goats to clear up brush we had at our new house.

We started with 4 mix breed goats and so started our goat adventure. We quickly realized that having goats was actually kind of fun. We purchased 3 more that next spring. Mark had always liked the look of Boer goats. He was always pointing them out to me and talking about having a couple and maybe raising them. We bought 2 bottle baby bucks in June of 2019. In February of 2020 we got the chance to

purchase an entire herd of Boer goats. 18 goats total. They talk about ‘goat math’ but I never understood it until then our first Boer kids will be born in January of 2021. So now starts our actual try at raising Boers. Stay tuned for all the fun to come!

Hello all! I’ve had a couple people reach out to me over the last couple weeks waiting on those baby goats pics. Unfortunately, we had a bit of bad luck on the breeding front this year, and as of right now I do not believe I have any does bred.

We lost our mature buck, Roscoe, last year in a freak accident. I was hoping that my 2 younger bucks would be up to the task, however it is evident now that they were still a bit too young to get the job done.

Farming can be super disappointing sometimes. I am however, very thankful for a healthy herd this year.

Pneumonia can be a real killer. I honestly didn’t think Roxy was going to make it when I found her a little over 2 weeks ago, under a dead tree, barely alive.

The road to recovery has been ROUGH for this poor little girl. She’s lost a lot of weight. She’s still weak. But the will to live is strong in this little one. She’s eating more. Ran to me when she saw the feed scoop this morning.

I think I can almost say we are out of the woods with her. Fingers crossed for her continual improvement.

When people tell me ‘goats ain’t worth sh*t”. Why do you waste your time raising them??

Here are examples of why. These does were sold today in Hutchinson, MN. Now yes, these beauties are on the show goat side and at the top of the breed standard. Not the market goat side that we’re currently on, but the fundamentals are basically the same.

The drive to produce better quality stock is a reality for show farms and market farms alike. Every year we strive to make our next kid crop better than the last.

Now will we ever achieve ‘elite’ status with our herd? Probably not. I have no real desire to step into the show pen. The time and effort devoted to the show life is one hell of a commitment. But I will always push for better quality stock and the continued progress of the breed.

Super bummed that the weather turned to crap, so we ended up not making the trip down to see the auction live. I always enjoy chatting with other Boer peeps across the state. Next year 😁
