🚨 LOCKDOWN DAY IS HERE! 🐣🥚

The turning has officially stopped, the humidity is up, and now comes the hardest part… waiting! 🤞

Our little quail eggs are entering the final stretch, and with a little luck, we’ll start seeing tiny pips in just a few days. Every hatch is exciting, but this one feels extra special!

Hatch week is finally here! 🐣✨

The countdown to lockdown is officially ON, and I’m pretty sure I’ve checked these incubators at least 100 times already. 😂 The excitement is so real! In just a few days, these quail and chick eggs should start hatching, and I seriously can’t wait to meet all of these tiny new babies.

Now excuse me while I go stare at the incubators… again. 🤎🥚🐥

Another day, another round of animal check-ins. 🐓🦆🐐🪺

From the brooder to the grow-outs, everyone gets a head count, fresh food and water, and a little extra attention. That’s one of my favorite parts of every day—watching them grow and making sure they’re thriving.

✨ Have you ever found a fairy egg? ✨

This tiny little egg beside a normal chicken egg is called a fairy egg (also known as a wind egg, rooster egg, or witch egg).

Despite the name, there’s nothing magical about it! Fairy eggs are usually laid when a hen’s reproductive system has a little hiccup. Most don’t contain a yolk—just egg white, and sometimes a tiny speck of tissue. They can also happen when a young hen is just starting to lay or when an older hen is nearing the end of her laying years.

🐔 Fun facts:
🥚 They’re completely normal and usually nothing to worry about if they happen occasionally.
🥚 They are very small because they often form without a yolk.
🥚 They’re perfectly safe to crack open, though you’ll usually just find egg white inside.
🥚 A hen that lays one will often be back to laying normal-sized eggs the very next day.

Nature always finds new ways to surprise us, and this little fairy egg was definitely a fun find during this morning’s egg collection!

5:00 AM wasn’t exactly how I planned to start my morning… 😅

Nothing gets you out of bed faster than incubator alarms. One of our incubators decided to malfunction, so before I had even had my coffee, I was carefully moving eggs and playing a game of incubator Tetris.

Thankfully, we had other incubators already running, so all of the quail eggs were safely moved while I work on getting the problem fixed. It’s not ideal, but that’s farm life, sometimes you have to improvise and make the best of the situation.

Here’s to hoping these little eggs never know the chaos that happened before sunrise! 🤞🐣

We made the switch to Hatching Time brooders and cages, and we can honestly say we wish we had done it sooner! 🙌

After using metal cages, we realized they just weren’t the best fit for our farm. Rust, tougher clean-up, and the potential for foot issues had us looking for something better. Hatching Time’s plastic systems have been a game changer! They’re rust-proof, easy to clean, power-washable, and designed with the health of our birds in mind. They also make our daily chores so much faster, which means more time enjoying the farm and less time scrubbing cages.

Meet the newest members of NLR Farms! 🐦🤍

We officially added 6 new quail to the farm, and we’re already a little obsessed! One of them has completely stolen my heart, his name is Romeo. ❤️ We also have two Celadon quail, including Romeo, and we can’t wait to see those beautiful blue eggs in the future!

Every new addition brings us one step closer to growing the covey we’ve been dreaming about. Watching this quail journey come together has been so much fun, and we’re excited to share it all with you!

✨ Meet the family behind NLR Farms! ✨

We figured it was time to properly introduce ourselves!

We’re Garrett and Erica, along with our three amazing girls—Nevaeh (18), Lydia (14), and Raylee (4). If you’ve ever wondered where the name NLR Farms came from… now you know! ❤️

After nearly two decades together, it feels like we’ve lived a hundred different lifetimes. We’ve walked through some of our hardest seasons and celebrated some of our greatest blessings. Every challenge has shaped us into who we are today and reminded us that God has been faithful through it all.

At the end of the day, we’re just a family who loves God, loves animals, and loves spending time together. Our little farm has become our happy place—a place where memories are made, lessons are learned, and dreams are slowly becoming reality.

We’re big dreamers, and we truly believe that with faith, hard work, and a whole lot of determination, incredible things can happen. So we’re building this life one animal, one project, one adventure, and one day at a time.
