"A country that doesn't remember it's history has no future" Hank Vogler reminds us of this wise saying on today's Rural Route Radio. A dose of global food production history combined with a bit of sheep shearing 101.

So glad we don't have to do this!

How about a little mid-week sheep music? Watch as sheep rancher and BLM permittee Denis Kowitz takes 1200 sheep across a 50-year-old wooden bridge. Denis has been crossing the historical bridge for more than 18 years. The bridge hangs 30 feet above the Big Wood River, connecting the Bennett Hills and Timmerman Hills with the Wood River Valley in south central Idaho. Since its construction, it has served as a connector for a major trailing route, allowing sheep to move from lower elevation to higher elevation pastures. Not for horses or the faint of heart, the bridge has been known to swing nearly two feet from side to side while livestock cross it. BLM maintains the bridge to the same standards consistent with footbridges, however, and routinely replaces old sections of wood and tightens the railings. Twelve bands (25,000 sheep) owned by three different operators will cross the bridge during the year.

People sometimes say to me, "I've heard sheep aren't very smart...is that true?" My answer: "Sheep are as smart as they need to be to be sheep."

Just thought about that today, then found this interesting fact from the Sweetgrass sheep site: Not only can sheep recognize up to 50 other sheep faces and remember them for 2 years, but they can also recognize human faces.

Hmm.

Although livestock guardian dogs (LGD) can be a significant force in protecting sheep and goats (and poultry), using these dogs is a lot more than placing a LDG breed pup with the flock and expecting them to know what to do. Good guardian dog owners know this, and expect to spend a good one to two years before the dog is fully ready to guard. Guardian breeds have a low prey drive (the opposite of high-prey drive breeds such as Border Collies and other herders), so training is a matter of molding the instinct and making sure they never, ever think it's ok to chase livestock.

Simon, our Anatolian pup, has two training sessions every day. In this photo he's 9 weeks old, and all we expected was gentle interaction with the goats. He can sniff and follow, but absolutely must never chase or play with them.

Coyotes were responsible for 51.7 percent of total predator kills on sheep, followed by dogs at 22.7 percent and mountain lions/cougars/pumas at 7.7 percent. Bears, fox, eagles, wolves and bobcats also prey on sheep and lambs.
The leading non-lethal control measures used to control predatory kills for the majority of sheep and lambs include guardian dogs and other guardian animals, hunting/trapping, night penning or confinement and fencing.

Ranchers and farmers spend in excess of $9.8 million annually on non-lethal control measures in an effort to safeguard flocks.

Sweetgrass . 25 Surprising Facts About Sheep | POV | PBS

Sheep have excellent peripheral vision. Their large, rectangular pupils allow them to see almost 360 degrees. In fact, they can see behind themselves without turning their heads
(and that's a good thing, since sheep are prey animals)

Did you know that wool played a role in the discovery of America, that sheep can recognize human faces and that sheep farm numbers have been declining for decades?
