Getting coops ready for winter coming and cooler temps last few days.
1. Cover the windward sides first. This will help block cold drafts and blowing snow.
2. Leave ventilation at the top. Don't completely seal the houses. Moisture and ammonia need somewhere to escape.
3. Secure the plastic with wooden strips and screws. This works better than staples alone when winter winds pick up.
4. Make a roll-up section. On warmer days, you can open part of the plastic for additional airflow.
Keep bedding dry. Silkies especially need dry conditions because their feathering doesn't repel moisture well.
5. One important thing: Chickens generally handle cold temperatures better than damp, drafty conditions. You want to block wind at their level while maintaining ventilation above their heads. Would be interested in hearing what you all do to prepare. 🙂
