I love calling the girls in for milking. Each one is so unique - they all have their own personalities! I’m so blessed to start and end my days with these sweet girls 💛

Drug-Addicted Cattle
By Kit Pharo

Every status quo beef publication is chock-full of articles and advertisements that are designed to make the readers believe they need to use a wide array of drugs and chemicals to keep their cattle healthy. I’m referring to insecticides, dewormers, vaccines, antibiotics, ionophores, hormones, etc., etc. Unfortunately, most status quo beef producers have bought into this line of thinking – hook, line, and sinker.
Allow me to challenge this drivel. I believe the continual use of drugs, chemicals, medications and whatever you are using has done nothing but create more and more drug-addicted cattle. It has gotten to the point that today’s status quo cattle simply cannot survive without their drugs. No one gains except the big pharmaceutical companies! That’s not what God intended when he created the first cow. Cattle should be able to adapt and live drug-free in nearly all environments.

This. This is why we farm. For all the little moments. For watching my kids learn to love and care for animals. Teaching them hard work and perseverance. Getting to see the sunrise and sunset everyday over God’s beautiful earth that we are blessed to care for. For having a life that we can be proud of. 💛

While at the beach the other day I got to thinking…

Farming is a lot like surfing. 🌊🐄

You set yourself up. You prepare. You make the best decisions you can with the information you have in that moment. You do everything you can to be ready for whatever comes next.

And then… you ride the wave.

Sometimes you’re flying high and everything feels smooth. Other times, the wave drops out from underneath you and you’re just trying to hang on.

But eventually, the wave passes. You paddle back out, reset, prepare again, and wait for the next one.

That’s farming.

You can’t control the weather, the markets, the animals, or all the unexpected things that come your way. You can only prepare as well as you can, make the best decisions you can in the moment, and then ride the wave.

Up. Down. Repeat. 🌊

And somehow, we keep paddling back out. ❤️🐄🌱

We are excited to welcome another new face to the farm. Merle has joined the herd as our new bull!

It was bittersweet to say goodbye to Junior, the bull we raised to replace Red, but we needed to bring in new bloodlines. We were fortunate enough to trade him for this guy from a good friend of ours.

He settled in well and we look forward to seeing his calves.

(It says AI content because I used it to take the fence out. See the original photo on the comments!)
