It's that time of year again! 4H and FFA are starting to show off their projects at county fairs! This is SUCH a critical time of year for these students and we always ask everyone to come out and support them as they show off all the hard work they have done raising their livestock projects. Come out to see a show and cheer the kids on and be sure to show up and bid on their projects at the auctions!
First up for this year is Lucia Neves! Lucia's wether, Hugo, is from our Copper Moon Boer Goat Ranch stock and is looking amazing! Check out her buyers letter and project photos here:
Dear Prospective Buyer,
Hi, my name is Lucia Neves and I am 15 years old. This is my sixth year in the Tassajara 4-H livestock program. This year I am raising a market goat, market lamb, and a pen of three meat rabbits. My goat’s name is Hugo, my sheep is Clementine, and my rabbits’ names are Pineapple, Strawberry, and Watermelon.
I am very committed to my animals. I go to the farm every single day and work very hard with them. Every Friday we have a goat and sheep meeting. Everyone is assigned a job to do, such as, cleaning the goat and sheep pens, cleaning the water buckets, feeding the goats and sheep, and we always weigh as well.
One of my favorite things to do with my goat, Hugo, is walking him. He is very cute and I absolutely love his spots! Every time I go in the pen to catch him, he comes up to me and puts his nose on me, like he is giving me a kiss. I exercise him by walking him up and down slightly steep hills to work his chest and bottom. He loves walks and I brace him and practice showmanship everyday. I work on keeping his legs squared and switching sides. Hugo’s ear tag number is #305. He will weigh around 115 pounds by weigh- in.
People have told me that when sheep get sheared they look ugly. Even though I miss Clementine’s fluffy wool, she still looks cute without it. I love to walk her up and down hills, brace and square her, and practice switching sides. She always looks like she is smiling at me and I find it funny when she tries to nibble on my necklaces. Clementine and I have a really strong bond because I will take her out of the pen with no halter and one time I accidentally let go of her head, and instead of running away, she just stood there waiting for me to catch her again. She loves to eat oak leaves as a treat too. Clementine’s ear tag number is #313. She will weigh around 130 pounds by weigh- in.
I have a pen of three meat rabbits as well. By show day the rabbits need to be less than seventy days old. Every morning and night I check to make sure they are fed, have fresh water, and their litter box is clean. I have been working on practicing showmanship with them. The showmanship consists of flipping your rabbit upside down to check their paws, dewclaws, teeth, eyes, nose, and stomach for any bumps or lumps. My rabbit’s names are Pineapple, Strawberry, and Watermelon.
The auction is on May 17 and it starts at 9am on Sunday. There will be a Buyer’s Breakfast on Sunday, the day of the auction, from 7:30-9am. There will also be lunch provided after the auction from 1-2:30pm. The Buyer’s Booklet can be found on the Contra Costa County Fair website.
I hope you will consider purchasing my animal(s) at the fair this year, or supporting another 4-H/ FFA exhibitor.
Thank you,
Lucia Neves
