Nutlets🔩? Catkins🐈? Husks🌽 and corks🍾?
There's lots of lingo in the pecan world that can be a little confusing- we'll be posting videos explaining what some of these things mean to cut to the heart of pecan vocabulary.
Speaking of cutting, did you know that grafting pecan trees are pruned down to sticks for planting?
I don't have a pun for this one, but if you do please comment and let me know!

We hope everyone is having a wonderful BAT-urday 🦇
Did you know that Swift River Pecans has over 20 bat houses deployed in our orchards?

Bats benefit agriculture substantially through their pest eating abilities. We have documented bats eating several species detrimental to pecan trees, and some species can even eat their entire body weight in bugs nightly!

Through DNA metabarcoding research conducted in our orchards, we know Brazilian free-tail bats (T. brasiliensis) and evening bats (N. humeralis) regularly populate our roosts, providing free pest management.

This is one bat house design of many. Our shop is open M-Sat 9-5 if you are interested in purchase. We are happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments!

Thank you for watching.

There's lots of lingo in the pecan world that can be a little confusing- we'll be posting videos explaining what some of these things mean to shed light on the subject of pecan vocabulary.

Speaking of shedding light, did you know that the leaves of pecan trees are split into leaflets to allow for light to get to lower leaves in the canopy?
I can't be-leaf it 🌿!

Why have bats on your farm 🦇?
How about environmentally friendly pest control🐝🐜🐛! We've found that bats on our orchard eat stink bugs, mosquitos, moths and more. These little pest control powerhouses keep our orchard's insects in check.

All videos were taken in our orchards, and all photos are credited to Merlin Tuttle from their photo gallery at https://merlintuttle.smugmug.com/. Visit https://www.merlintuttle.org/ to learn more.

Time for another PECAN VARIETY SPOTLIGHT🌿🌳 ✨

These are Pawnee pecans, one of several Pecan
cultivars that we grow here at Swift River Pecans. Did you know that Pawnee Pecans are a cross between the "Mohawk" variety and the "Starking Hardy Giant" variety? That's nuts!

Took time for a quick question for Troy today- what does biodiversity mean for his regenerative pecan orchard?
Keeping a healthy and diverse ecosystem doesn’t weaken our productivity, it strengthens it🐝🐜🐛. Here at Swift River Pecans, biodiversity is just one of the pillars of Regenerative Agriculture that we practice- our orchard floor is a thriving ecosystem of native Texas plants, bugs, birds, and mammals that keep the health of our soil (and each other!) in check. At any time of day we can walk through the orchard and see a wealth of animals, big and small, living below our Pecan trees🌳.
We love our critters at SRP!
