Timothy extracting honey. We got about 3 gallons off of one hive yesterday. We now know why honey is expensive. It is one VERY sticky job! And the wax stuck in strainers.......but it is very rewarding and delicious and organic!

A prize winning photo by my son, Caleb (17 years old). This is one of our honey bees doing it's job!

Hi Sarah,

You asked about my grain mills and what kind I have.

I have two.

One is a Retzel Mill with the stones. It runs off of a washing machine motor. Does a good job; a nice quiet, slow grind. Slow grind is good in that it doesn't heat up the flour and therefore lose nutrients. But it doesn't grind the flour really fine. It has two different stone heads. One for coarse and one for fine. This is a work horse that will last many life times. Mine is electric.

I also have a Whisper Mill which grinds the berries very fine. It is quite noisy and the flour does warm up. But it is easy to operate and very fast.

I bought both of mine used. The Retzel on Craig's List (paid about $200) and the Whisper Mill at our local thrift store for $5 (worth about $250 new!). The Whisper Mill had never been used. A very rare find! I had never seen one ever in all of my thrift/garage sale shopping.

You could watch for deals on Craig's List or ebay. Or post an ad on Craig's List.

Great question!

Helen

Tim and Caleb's friend, Jonas is here visiting for the week before he heads up to start his own farrier (shoeing horses) business up in Green Bay/Sturgeon Bay area. He took a turn feeding the calves. Jonas has been a great blessing to our family (his whole family has been!) to us over the 30 plus years we have known them. We wish you all the best Jonas in your new ventures. You are a talented, godly and sweet young man and we are so proud to know you and to have you as a friend to our family.

Time to remove this year's strawberries! This means taking all the straw off and moving the straw over to the tomatoe and bean plants for mulch. A BIG job. We are grateful that it isn't a sweltering day and that 'Beka is now back working on the farm part-time for the summer. Welcome back 'Beka!
