Pretty sweet tree! This week our *tentative* plan is to start peeling back the 8ft fencing that you can see in the second video, and this tree is within the fencing (at the end of the video). We also plan to rent a dumpster to clear out a bunch of the roofing and other materials from the fallen down barn. We’re in peak planting season but this project is jumping to the top of the to do list because there is an enormous rabbit population living within this area and they keep eating our plants! My beautiful tomatoes plants in the nearby high tunnel have had their stems skinned with those rabbit fangs (last pic). There are so many that while we were out walking tonight one hopped across the roof of the fallen barn! We also have a huge pile of wood/brush we need to burn, which will also allow us to eliminate a ground hog hole that’s been plaguing us for years, so we will see how much progress we make this week…

We transplanted our heated high tunnel with tomatoes two weeks ago. The plants were seeded back in late January and we grew then out under ceramic metal halide lights for 5-6 weeks. We’re very focused on increasing our efficiency so we’ve cut back on the number of early tomatoes we start. We grow just enough to fill our two high tunnels- one heated, one not. We will then root out suckers from those plants to supply ourselves with the about 1,000 field plants we need instead of starting them from seed. The transplanted tomatoes are already starting to push out suckers so we’ll wait until they’re 4-6” and then root them out. We can also fit all the tomatoes and peppers we need under 4 lights which we run for 18 hours per day for 5-6 weeks, and then the lights go off and everything is moved outside to our high tunnel we start heating to 60F. Our plan is to transplant our unheated high tunnel tomatoes this week as long as the forecast doesn’t project lower than mid-20s, which they can survive when double covered. We’ll also pot up the peppers/eggplant/tomatillos into 5” pots which they’ll grow in until the last frost in early May.

We restock our feeders about every 3rd day, so with the amount of hay we have left we have less than 10 restocks to go before they're off to greener pastures!

Watering our tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. We will start transplanting the tomatoes into our heated high tunnel next week. Everyone was happy to see the growing plants… well, not everyone…

Good riddance snow! We all made our way down to the high tunnel today to rip out last year’s tomato plants. One advantage of waiting this long is that they’re completely dried out, so light! We (mostly Jimmy) will finish clearing this and then direct seeding it with beets, lettuce, and kale.
This house hasn’t been cleared since last season because our fall was quite eventful- little Coralie was born in early October, and just two weeks before that we closed on our neighbor’s house, which has been an absolute dream come true. We now live in the house in the 5th pic, which can be seen from just outside the greenhouse instead of the building that’s off in the distance in the next pic. We have loved stretching out into our new house and gutting all our possessions from our old one. We also gained 2.3 acres with the purchase which squares off our property. The past few months have been a huge life reorganization, and we’re so ready to now make our way back outside and get to growing some delicious veggies!

We’re dreaming about warmer weather and getting pictures together for our newsletter. On this day from last June we were probably working dawn to dusk, and even though our days currently have a lighter load, we can’t wait to be back in the chaos. We will be sending out our newsletter to encourage people to sign up for our CSA shortly. If you don’t want to wait for the newsletter, feel free to go straight to our website!

Jimmy showed off his bottle babies to our nephews. Thankfully the other 40+ lambs are fed by their mothers. 🐑
