Cody’s favorite part of summer is the w**d management crew being back on duty and requiring him to “supervise” the progress 🤪🤣.

Bees for Sarah Shevett !

We often get the question of “do you keep bees” or “are you interested in keeping bees”. While we are certainly very much pro bee given that Cody has a bee sting allergy we do not keep hives on the farm. However, when our friend at Humboldt Bay Wool asked if we’d put up a swarm trap we of course said yes.

It’s been a little disappointing checking it every few days over the past month and seeing no activity. Yesterday when we went to take a look there was finally some busy little bees who’d moved in and were getting down to business.

The Humboldt County weather forecast is calling for a sunny 70° here on the coast and that means it’s the perfect weekend to get out and explore.

Tiny Farmer and Cody celebrated the end of the school year with a two mile hike last night. They’re talking about slipping away from the farm for both beach and river days this weekend too.

Remember when you’re out there exploring this weekend: read safety signs, never turn your back on the ocean, check for ticks, have fun and cool off with some Jersey Scoops!

One of our favorite days of the year is shearing. The fleece is like a report card of the year and we are always blessed with some fabulous help skirting fleeces. This year Fiber Shed came to our spring shearing as part of the Wool Quality Improvement Program and Paige Green Photography captured some great shots of the day. Many hands make the work lighter and great people make the day fun!

Just dancing our way through hump day on the farm. It rained yesterday and now the forecast says a sunny 70° for the weekend. Life is good!

A peaceful spring morning brought to you by the rain, birds and new seeding 🤩. Sometimes we all just need to take a moment to stop in our busy lives and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.

Starting the day with the flock in the fields. Breeding season is just around the corner for the sheep so it’s time we start flushing the ewes and getting them ready for task ahead.

“Flushing” refers to the practice of increasing a ewes plain of nutrition prior to breeding to increase their fertility rate (% of ewes conceiving and number of lambs per ewe). You can do this by supplementally feeding them or moving them onto a higher quality forage.

Saturdays are for trying something new! Cody took a little break from the farm to join his cousin in enjoying the natural beauty of Humboldt County. They ran up the hills, across a few streams, through the redwoods and to the finish line 10.5 miles later. It was a journey, but no cousin was left behind 🤪🤣

Thank you for a fun and challenging new experience. If you’ve never experienced the redwoods, you don’t have to run to enjoy them, just plan a visit to Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

New pasture moves for the heifers! Every few days we rotate our dairy heifers onto a new piece of pasture. This provides continuous access to fresh forage, positively impacts the soil ecology and keeps the animals moving a head of the parasite cycle.
