County Officials Warn Taxpayers of Property Tax Payment Scam

San Bernardino, CA — With secured property tax bills set to be mailed in early October, San Bernardino County Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector (ATC) Ensen Mason is warning taxpayers to watch out for scams targeting property tax payments.

“We want to make sure taxpayers are aware that scammers may try to take advantage of this mailing period by sending fake bills or making fraudulent phone calls requesting payment,” said Mason. “Our office never initiates unsolicited phone calls or emails requesting payment for secured property taxes. If you receive such a call or message, it is a scam.”

OFFICIAL PROPERTY TAX BILLS

ATC will mail secured property tax bills for the 2025–2026 fiscal year in early October. Taxpayers are encouraged to carefully review these bills and ensure payments are made only through official, secure channels.

SAFE AND SECURE PAYMENT OPTIONS

The most secure and effective way to pay property taxes is online through ATC’s official website. Other safe options include:

By Mail: Send payments to the Tax Collector’s Office at 268 West Hospitality Lane, First Floor, San Bernardino, CA 92415-0360
In Person: Visit the Tax Collector’s Office at the same address during regular business hours.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAMS

Do not respond to unsolicited phone calls, emails, or text messages requesting payment or credit card information.
Be cautious of fake bills or suspicious notices that do not match your official property tax bill.
Report suspected fraud to ATC or your local law enforcement agency.
“Protecting taxpayers from scams is a top priority,” Mason added. “We urge all property owners to use secure payment options and remain vigilant when handling property tax matters.”

San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Josie Gonzales also stresses the importance of taxpayer awareness, noting that scams may target property owners in different ways. “While the Assessor’s Office is responsible for valuing property and applying exemptions, we never collect payments for property taxes,” said Gonzales. “If you receive a suspicious phone call, email, or letter demanding payment from the Assessor’s Office, it is fraudulent. When in doubt, always verify directly with the County before providing any personal or financial information.”
