Congratulations Reggie Pagaling! 💖

Congratulations to Santa Ynez Chumash community member Reggie Pagaling! Reggie was recently unanimously re-elected to his second term as chairman for the California Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC); a role he has held since first being appointed chairman of NAHC by then-governor Jerry Brown in 2013.

Established in 1976, NAHC’s primary responsibility is the protection of sacred sites, Native American burials and the return of ancestors to their respective communities. The NAHC, which is composed of a nine-member body, is also charged with ensuring California Native American tribes’ accessibility to ancient Native American cultural resources on public lands, overseeing the treatment and disposition of inadvertently discovered Native American human remains and burial items, and administering the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA), among many other powers and duties.

“Reggie Pagaling is dedicated to the work of the NAHC and takes his leadership role to heart,” shared Buffy McQuillen, Vice Chair for NAHC. “He has been a constant advocate for sacred site protection and tribal consultation. We are excited to see him continue in this role and looking forward to seeing his service in action.”

Congratulations, Reggie, and thank you for the meaningful work you do for NAHC.
