Last week, we honored Richard Sanford at an intimate dinner at the Alma Rosa Estate during our Wine & Fire weekend.

After returning home from the Vietnam War, Richard found a country deeply divided and broken. Seeking peace and a way to heal, he turned to nature. As a trained geographer, he looked at the unique geography of the Sta. Rita Hills and saw extraordinary potential where others didn’t.

Alongside biologist Michael Benedict, Richard chose an old bean field to plant cool-climate Pinot Noir—a delicate grape that had previously struggled in other parts of California. His leap of faith ultimately put our region on the global wine map.

Thank you, Richard, for your vision, your quiet wisdom, and everything you’ve given to this region over the last 50+ years🍷
