Spring is here and summer is fast approaching. The warmer weather invites white wine to be on the table. I think white wine should always be on the table and for me it is Chardonnay. It is the first wine I ever made beginning in 1984 when I began my career at Morgan Winery.
I have always been drawn to the richness and suppleness buttressed by the acidity found in cool climate sites. The juxtaposition of the earth and fruit and how they play on the richness. I love that it has the potential to develop further with age building upon the polyphenolic compounds forming more nuanced flavors of earth and fruit.
In 1986 with only my second vintage of Chardonnay(1985) in bottle the wine director for the White House, a gentleman by the name of David Berkeley contacted the winery to inform us that he had selected Morgan Chardonnay as a gift. President Reagan would be delivering to General Secretary of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev at the Moscow Summit meeting. As this was political news it was in every paper across the country and literally put Morgan winery on the map. I was 28 years old and had no real comprehension of what it all meant to the winery, to our distributors, our customers, or to myself really. It just seemed to be something that happened over there somewhere. It certainly gave me some confidence in what we were doing in the cellar crafting Chardonnay that had gained the respect of Mr. Berkeley the first ever White House Director of Wine.
