Long Post Ahead
In the last 5 years, the USDA estimates that there has been a 7% decrease in farms nationwide. While there has been natural disasters, and drought, it’s important to remember that the government always has its part to play.
Over the last 250 years the United States government (regardless of Party) has proved time and again that they are not to be trusted by Farmers. Whether it be laws made that place unreasonable fines for environmental infractions (that change constantly), tariffs, or even ICE operations, farmers always end up with the crap end. Let’s start with the early Republic alone. While there were more, two of the most notable rebellions were Shay’s and The Whisjey Rebellion- both brought on by unjust taxes that primarily hit farmers. Then after the Civil War, the government made a promise that freedmen counted their lives on- then took it back (that still happens to farmers all the time by the way). That led to sharecropping, creating a crippling cycle of poverty and debt. Fast forward to the 20th century and you’ve got FDR’s “The New Deal,” and Richard Nixon’s “Great Grain Robbery.” Then, the government encouraged farmers to buy more land in the 70s, all for Reagan’s “Trickle Down” system to destroy farmers and make the land they went in debt for worthless in the 80s. So no, I’m not buying that the government hasn’t had any part in beef production disruption- even if it was unintentional.
With all that, let this serve as a reminder that the American people take care of each other- not the government. When you can, support your local farms. Pray for relief. Pray for rain. Pray for workers. Pray that they would be provided for, and pray that we, the American citizens will be provided for.
