Once this beef starts being sold, it may not be labeled as to where it comes from, how it's processed, or what inspection has been done. Speaking strictly for our product it's grass and hay fed/finished and processed by a small processor. What may or may not impact us is yet to be determined. As was said in the article we understand prices are higher for ground beef at the store, but the 25% less cost that had been stated- at what cost will it be to the ranchers and farmers?

I haven’t posted on this topic. I’ve honestly been trying to research and gather my thoughts on all different viewpoints and opinions.

I’ve concluded… We need to start looking at the bigger picture.

I understand people are frustrated with the price of beef. Nobody likes walking into the grocery store and seeing what a pound of ground beef costs right now.

But here’s the part I wish more people understood…

When we try to solve high beef prices by bringing in hundreds of thousands of tons of cheaper foreign beef, we may lower the price at the grocery store for a little while, but what happens to the American cattle producer who is already struggling to make the numbers work?

Because the cost of raising cattle isn’t going down.

Feed isn’t going down. Fuel isn’t going down. Equipment isn’t going down. Land sure isn’t going down.

In fact, farmers and ranchers are watching developers offer prices for agricultural land that farming could never compete with. A piece of ground can be worth far more to someone wanting to build on it than it could ever earn growing crops or raising cattle.

And once that ground leaves agriculture, we don’t get it back.

So yes, beef is expensive.

But maybe the answer shouldn’t simply be, “How do we get cheaper beef?”

Maybe we should also be asking, “How do we make sure there are still American cattlemen around to raise it?”

Because if we keep pushing the price of beef down while the cost of producing it keeps climbing, eventually there will be fewer and fewer people willing, or able, to do it.

And as consumers, we actually have a voice in this.

Know where your beef comes from.

Buy from your local farmer or rancher when you can. Buy from the local butcher who sources from local producers. Ask questions about what you’re putting on your family’s table.

This isn’t about politics for me.

It’s about food. It’s about farmers.

It’s about keeping American farmland in agriculture.

And it’s about making sure our kids and grandkids still have American cattle producers to buy beef from years from now.

Cheap beef today isn’t much of a victory if we don’t have American farmers and farms left to raise it tomorrow.
