We’re excited to share that our Urban Planning and Design Director, Alex Jung, will be speaking at InterActions 2026: Advancing Housing and Transportation Solutions, hosted by the UCLA Lewis Center.

This year’s conference brings together practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and advocates to explore how California can move from ambitious housing, transportation, and climate goals into real implementation on the ground. Alex will join the conversation with City Fabrick’s perspective on community-centered planning, equitable mobility, and the small-scale tools that can help turn big policy ideas into tangible neighborhood change.

Join us on Monday, May 18 at The California Endowment in Los Angeles.

The Revolution Will Be Televised.

We’re excited to announce Designing Resistance Film Week, presented by City Fabrick in partnership with the Art Theatre of Long Beach. From April 23–30, join us for a week of films, conversations, and events that explore how design can challenge power, amplify voices, and shape resistance across disciplines and scales.

Each day, we’ll be highlighting a featured film from the lineup, offering a closer look at the stories and ideas driving this program.

Visit designingresistance.com for more information and showtimes, and purchase tickets at the Art Theatre website. Links in bio.

Construction is now underway at Helen Drake Senior Village, a new affordable housing community that will provide much-needed homes and supportive outdoor spaces for low-income seniors in Long Beach.

Designed in partnership with the Richman Group, City Fabrick shaped a welcoming landscape that integrates with the Helen Drake Senior Center prioritizing accessibility, comfort, and connection—featuring shaded gathering areas, walking paths, and garden spaces that support daily activity, social interaction, and overall wellbeing.

As construction begins, this milestone represents an important step toward creating a stable, service-enriched environment where older adults can age in place with dignity, strengthening both individual health and the broader community.

How can landscape design transform a dense housing site into a place that supports connection, comfort, and daily outdoor use?

At Villa Vanowen, we organized the site into layered outdoor environments that extend residential life beyond the building footprint while advancing sustainability goals. As City Fabrick’s first built LEED-certified project, the landscape plays a key role in performance, including an on-site cistern that collects and reuses stormwater to reduce potable water demand.

The framework establishes a sequence of programmed spaces—streetscape planting, shaded gathering zones, activity decks, outdoor dining areas, and garden plots—that support daily use and interaction. A bosque of trees defines the main courtyard, while planted berms frame entrances and reinforce thresholds. Abundant shade trees and vines cool the site and soften the architecture, creating a comfortable microclimate.

Circulation was structured to optimize access, safety, and legibility, strengthening connections between public edges and interior courtyards. Durable materials, integrated seating, and native, low-water species such as deer grass, Cleveland sage, and California poppy enhance resilience, reduce irrigation demand, and provide seasonal variation.

We are excited to see our team grow professionally with us.

We had a string of promotions over the past year that we wanted to recognize. Cassidy Hart and Yancy Gamboa both were promoted to Designer II while Esequiel Ramirez was promoted to Planner II. Jaqueline Wee continues to shine as she was promoted to Senior Landscape Designer. Vesper Lin is now Designer II for The Urban Planning + Design Team.

They have all been taking on greater responsibilities as they build their respective skills, expertise, and experience.

Community outreach and planning is now underway for Zone In: Everyone’s Coast.

We are leading the City of Long Beach planning effort to enhance coastal access through mobility
improvements and explore zoning updates that support equitable development opportunities near the shoreline.

Part of the broader “Zone In” initiative, the Everyone’s Coast project looks at two areas: coastal neighborhoods where zoning is being updated to meet the current and future need, and Central Long Beach corridors where walking, biking, transit, and street connections to and from the beach are reimagined with community in mind.

Feedback gathered now will help shape how access, land use, and connectivity evolve in the years ahead.

What happens when neighbors come together to pause, reflect, and imagine what comes next?

We recently gathered at the Historic Bembridge House in the Wilmore District for the final Neighbor-to-Neighbor Roundtable, bringing together community members who have helped shape and sustain the program from the very beginning. The day was both a celebration and a reflection, highlighting the impacts and lessons of Neighbor-to-Neighbor, sharing stories of connection and care, and exploring how we can carry its values forward beyond the program’s formal close.

A special thank you to Andrea of Inkforma for capturing the conversation through live graphic recording, and to the Bembridge House staff for being gracious hosts and welcoming our neighbors with a tour of the historic property.
