All spring I've been telling you to wait — and I meant it.
As a Boulder County grower and Master Gardener, I plant by the same rules I share at the market: don't put tomatoes or peppers in the ground until the soil has truly warmed up. Cold soil stresses roots, stunts growth, and sets your plants back before they ever have a chance.
That time is now. Temperatures are where they need to be, and I'm confident saying: this is your planting window.

Cold, wet May? It’s exactly what we need!!

But, that’s exactly why we wait until May 30–31 to release our 1-gallon heirloom tomato plants.

Here in Boulder County, we know how tempting it is to get tomatoes in the ground early — warm days tease you into it. But, we hear it every summer: "My tomatoes are just sitting there" or "they never really took off...can you help?"

I say YES, and here's why. Tomatoes planted into cold, wet soil stall out before they ever get going. Soil temps need to hit 60–65°F, and nighttime lows need to stay above 50°F consistently. We're not there yet — and that's okay.

Oh, to be an apple farmer. It’s so dramatic.🍎 These pics and vid were taken this morning.

The freeze tonight will hit us hard, but we have front-line soldiers who will help break this windy frost and support our most valuable apples.

Our heirloom cider crabs have dreams of creating wonderful cider blends, but just in their second leaf, they will take the brunt of this freeze. Sitting in the North Central side of the orchard, our mighty crabs will feel the full force of wind chill between 22°F and 28°F. They will temper the NE blast just a bit for the rest of the orchard.

Wickson, Geneva, Virginia, Dolgo, and Kerr…the most cold hardy of all. Hang on! You could be our Heroes! 🍎🥶🙏
