Quaking Aspen Farms

Quaking Aspen Farms A small farm specializing in Icelandic Sheep, KuneKune Pigs, and various rare breed poultry.

Quaking Aspen Farms was founded after recognizing the need for access to fresh food in small, very rural communities. In areas where large ranches are the main industry, the "Farm to Table" experience is almost non-existent. Quaking Aspen Farms wants to help our local community have access to better food by closing that "last mile".

We recently wrote about some local farmers raising their pigs to the highest animal welfare standards. (Link in comments.) The article below shows the flip side of pig farming, the way 97% of pigs are raised.

While we certainly disagree with some of the ideals of organizations like DxE, we are thankful for the work they are doing in exposing the inhumanity perpetrated by producers that would have you believe they are treating their animals well.

The most powerful way to improve standards for our farm animals is to support farmers that you KNOW prioritize animal happiness.

We are extremely proud to be part of the International Kunekune Pig Preservation Project which collects and tracks on farm data of the Kunekune Pig Breed in order to calculate Expected Progeny Differences(EPDs). This data will be instrumental in shaping breeding programs, improving genetics and optimizing the Kunekune Pig for Pastured Pork Production! We are forever grateful for the ongoing service of Chris Crump of Agriculture Ultrasound who visits our farm regularly to perform data collection through ultrasound. Chris has an outstanding background in ultrasound technology having been in the industry for over 30 years on an international level. He routinely visits swine operations in China, Japan, India and Europe performing ultrasound and contributing to EPDs and genetic improvement. Our pigs are routinely ultrasound for back fat and loin eye thickness at one of year of age. Typical processing age is 12 months and the majority of our pigs weigh in between 200-220 pounds at this time. The data we have collected thus far, although limited, has given us increased insight and improved our selection process for future breeding animals. For those of you interested in learning more about the International Kunekune Pig Preservation Project as well as and plan on attending the upcoming EASSS/Eastern Annual Sanctioned Show and Sale in Bedford, PA! We will be there to share insight regarding our experiences thus far! See you in PA!

OMG!

The x-ray on the left is of a foxtail tract that was injected with contrast medium to show just how far a foxtail can travel. The lesion between the toes of the foot on the bottom right is how these tracts will look to the naked eye. This is a great example of just how far foxtails can migrate in tissues. Thank you to Dr. Andrew Grange from Veterinary Surgical Centers in Berkeley for this amazing x-ray.

Food doesn't come from the grocery store. We all need farmers!

I spent most of yesterday attempting to construct an epic quail run. It's not completed yet, but the quail must have known I was thinking about them - one escaped this morning and was waiting for me in the kitchen! She was happy to let me catch her and put her back in with her sisters.

Josie was a good girl and barked to let me know something was awry, the only reason I even got up this morning.

From start to finish!

The former teacher in me loooves a good graphic organizerπŸ€“ This one is from our friends over at to outline all the work and logistics that go from getting food from the farm to the plate. Raising food is just one job in a healthy local food economy, but what good is that without the meat processor or the small grocer who stocks the bacon or the Farmers market or the chef, all of whom help get the product to the plate... or the snack bag in your purse? .
