I want to discuss respiratory distress in regards to all this weather with the smoke and the fires I highly recommend do not take in any adult birds or anything that has been outside living in this smoke you're going to be dealing with upper respiratory distress one way or another if you take on any outside birds Any movement can trigger stress and on top of that there already under stress from the smoke stress can trigger trigger upper respiratory infections... Bird can carry upper respiratory virus and never expose or expose or exhibit symptoms until they are put under stress such as moving them from home to home and/or this horrible smoke it is contagious it's not something I would recommend doing at this time... If you need new babies I recommend getting things that have never been outside in this smoke...
WHAT TO DO:
If we are residing in California which is most of PLACER COUNTY, I highly suggested antibiotics... if a bird has any signs of or already has come down with respiratory distress.... but, you can't get those because we live in this beautiful golden state of bullsh*t..🙄 excuse my French true... so there's this beautiful HERB it's a year round Evergreen called OREGANO....So long story short grow it in your garden regardless of the smoke... it is a plant I swear by, and I'm not all into the herbal remedy stuff or whatever...BUT THIS WILL MK YOU THINK TWICE....Just saying..
BUT....let me tell you OREGANO has saved a few lives here on the farm over the years... It does not harm them... there is no exact dose that I know of I just grab it n feed it... I recommend growing the plant in your yard plant porch wherever its easier...it's an Evergreen you can just pick a few sprags off and give them to your birds as a maintenance thing.. especially right!.... now upper respiratory distress is a creepy thing, it can be hidden for weeks, even months or years!...(hence be careful if u get outside birds from ANYWHERE!)...under stress it rears its ugly head... it's also a virus that is shed by rats Skunks and other predatory friends that come in the night to drink out of the water, eat the chicken food on the ground and steal your eggs....NEVER LEAVE FOOD OUT AT NIGHT ....INCLUDING EGGS !... DO NOT INVITE ANYONE TO DINNER ....they can shed up a respiratory virus....it is a silent deadly thing.. The best maintenance that you can practice is giving them a fresh sprig of OREGANO...just pick a few sprigs and throw it on the ground in they're co-op... they will go nuts over it....you can not overmedicate them they will love it and it makes them better so if you see any birds that are gasping and/or their comb might be tinted blue or black they don't feel good!!!... birds are a prey animal they will not exhibit any weakness until they have already succumbed to sickness they have to hide it as to not become prey...so be very vigilant be proactive put 1 to 2 tablespoons per 2 gallons of water of Apple cider vinegar in thier Water... and throw some sprigs of fresh Oregano in their co-op and they will go crazy for it...
