It’s been a LONG night for eastern Washington.
We’re in the clear here at home. It’s smoky, we woke up with some ash, but no immediate risk. Spokane on the other hand got hammered last night.

We have fenced pasture.
We have hay.
We have water.
We have space for dry camping.
We have hands for manual labor.

Those south and west of us, be safe.

Winona’s morning included a good brushing and a bunch of snacks. She’s about 10 months old now.

I think I may pair Loretta with the sire again this year. I’m pleased with ‘Nona’s temperament, structure and size still. Maybe I’ll even get those Highpark colors on the next go around.

This years keeper kids have been grubbing on cottonwood branches all summer with their premium access in the main barnyard (their weaning purgatory). I cut some every day for the each pen of goats, as well as the cows and pigs. As fast as I top them, they seem to grow back in and replenish themselves. Everyone else enjoys their shade over the barn, napping midday under their massive shadow. My husband despises them, they’re messy and fragile trees. I adore them, almost as much as the goats.

It’s break time for the hens and the incubator until the fall cooldown. The brooder is empty for the first time since April. The chicks are all off heat and feathering out well, they are loving life outdoors. I’m loving the improvements in my head and tail poofs I’m seeing this year.

I brought in some new blood early this year and they are looking like they will be welcomed additions to my breeding flock, I’d been looking for the right chocolate genetics for some time.

Miss Dumpling is sure growing fast. Her and Delilah are inseparable, she’s found her place and become a part of the barnyard. Everyone who visits falls in love with her, she’s pushy and needy. She demands attention by rooting on your ankles as soon as your within reach. She is quick to flop for a belly rub or sprawl out for a nice butt scratch.

Well guys. The farm stand is officially closed, signs come down today.

The last 5 years have been fun. I met new neighbors, my eggs traveled the country between your families, I had the opportunity to make sourdough for your Easter and Christmas dinners.

Since our winter slow down (happens every year, we live in a resort community) we never picked back up. Our spring influx never arrived. I’ve been donating eggs to local food banks weekly due to the overstock. With the rising costs of feed and cartons, I can no longer justify keeping my flocks just to donate their eggs.

This week I listed my laying chickens and ducks. They will all be gone by Sunday. I suppose it’s time for me to move onto whatever is next in my path.

Thank you to those who supported my silly goals, I appreciate you all so much and I’ll miss seeing your faces while you came to shop my little stand.
