I feed WHAT to my baby? 😮
I haven’t talked about this on a public platform before but here we go. My 6 month old daughter has been raised exclusively on a homemade goat’s milk formula. At less than three weeks old we made the hard decision to switch from breast feeding to the goats milks formula and I have no regrets.
When we first made the decision to switch I had no support, just a hand written recipe and a comment that a friend of a friend raised their premie twins on this formula and we dove in. The base being fresh goats milk and a handful of other reasonable additives. Already having a milk goat it was an excellent choice for us. But being a first time mom and not having anyone to bounce things off of was stressful in its own sense.
What supplements do I need?
How do I mix it?
How do I know if she’s getting enough?
What will my pediatrician say?
Will I be ostracized for this decision?
At that point in time I didn’t have the answers. And like us moms do, I dug in. I followed the recipe to a T and sheepishly told my pediatrician what we were going to do and he was so supportive! There’s been some lumps and bumps and we’ve learned along the way.
I LOVE knowing exactly what is going into my baby. I love that there are no recalls and I love that she’s thriving. It’s definitely not the easy way. It takes a lot of time and a little planning ahead. But it’s worth it.
She just had her 6 month check up and she’s measuring at the 99th percentile for height and 87th percentile for weight. I breathe a little easier now. I don’t think twice about mixing up a batch or packing a bottle. It’s second nature. A lot more questions have been answered and I feel confident answering when people ask me what we feed her.
100’s of gallons, a lot of hours, a couple more goats and many late nights later I’m proud to be where we are at. My baby is thriving and my mental status is too!
Do you have questions?
Should I post more about the process?
I’m so happy to share what has worked so well for us!
