A stunning morning of frost, sun and mist. Thankful for the cold to tell all the trees, plants and frogs to stay dormant, to wait. It really isn’t spring even if it has been so warm. Thankful for the sun in all its glory.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Last night on our evening walk, the mist was rising from the fields, and the moon was growing full in the sky.

David with the cattle. We feed along an electric line. They don’t waste as much by standing on it, pooping on it and laying on it. In a couple weeks, they will go in to the overwinter area and be off pasture for the rest of the Season.

We were excited to get the 3 1/2 acres of our pasture renovation project, seeded with a cover crop of rye, oats, triticale, vetch, and clovers before the coming rain. We were able to use the San Juan Islands Conservation District's no till seed drill. This piece of equipment is available for farmers and landowners to rent at minimal cost here in the islands. We are hoping to increase fertility and a production here on the farm while addressing issues of wild roses coming up in our pasture. It is also exciting to see the trees in our Hedgerow project getting bigger. You can see the walnuts and standard apples in the row behind the tractor.

A whirlwind Seattle trip. David spoke on a panel at the Washington Organics Recycling Council’s compost operator’s training at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center. We got a tour of Doug Collin’s long term research looking at no-till, cover crops, compost application and animal integration. In the picture with broccoli you can see the difference with compost application (the bigger plants). And this morning we were able to join the No Kings rally at the Seattle Center. There were streams of people arriving from Fremont, Capitol Hill, from the ferries. So many people gathering with such good energy, creative signs, resolve and passion. With so many threats to our democracy happening all at once it was so gratifying to get off the island and feel the gathering of energy and solidarity that was happening today. On the ferry headed home, we are celebrating what happened today, in Seattle, on Lopez and so many places, big and small.

Another beautiful day.

Excited to be getting our first spinach babies out in the field with our new paper pot transplanter. It is exciting to have a new tool that will make some of our ongoing chores in the market garden easier and faster.
