Willow is easily planted by pushing cuttings directly into the ground. At Dingdong’s Garden, a combination of drip tape and w**d barrier is utilized to support initial growth and manage competition. Over time, the w**d barrier is removed as the established canopy suppresses unwanted vegetation. Pruning techniques such as coppicing and pollarding are employed to maintain the health of the plants and facilitate the manual harvesting of branches at a manageable height.

Golden Willow provides yellow and orange tones to a garden landscape during the winter months. This variety is easily propagated by taking dormant or live cuttings and placing them directly into the ground where there is adequate sunlight and moisture. Once planted, these cuttings establish quickly, showing substantial growth within a twelve month period. To maintain the bright coloration characteristic of first-year wood, the plant must be pruned back to a base near the ground every year.

These are Riviera Mulberry cuttings eight weeks after being planted. We use nine inch tree pots filled with ProMix or a 25/75 mix of perlite/peat. The bottoms of the cuttings are treated with growth hormone and the cutting above the soil line is wrapped with parafilm. We place them on bottom heat at 75-80 deg with no direct light for two weeks.

Dwarf Arctic Willow, also known as Nana Willow, is a unique variety characterized by its very fine stems and pointed leaves. Unlike many other willow varieties that develop a thick base stem that tapers upward as branches mature, the Dwarf Arctic Willow maintains thin, delicate stems from the base to the top. This plant offers a distinct texture and growth habit compared to traditional willow species found in landscapes.

Fransgeel Rood Willow is a variety suitable for adding winter color to a landscape. This plant functions as a hedge due to its growth habit. The foliage is green on top with new growth appearing as a mixture of red and green. When pruned or coppiced as a hedge, the fringes of each stem provide a distinct visual appearance. The dried wood of Fransgeel Rood Willow retains an orangish-red color after a drying period of six months. This material is useful for decorative purposes and basketry applications.
