In 1948, when Dittmer was just 12 years old he started working at his family's delicatessen in Hamburg, Germany. After working in several grocery stores and butcher shops, Dittmer and his wife Margaret Bubert decided it was time to open up their very own small business, Dittmer's Gourmet Meats & Wurst-Haus. Dittmer's collection of recipes were shaped from his German roots as well as many mentors he met along the way. His passion and drive of making quality sausages, lunch meats, and smoke meats led to many awards and loyal Customers. Today, Dittmer's legacy is carried on in Los Altos, California by his daughter Petra Silva.

Oktoberfest Bierwurst — Last Batch of the Season!

What started as a 25 lb test batch turned into 50 lbs, and then 100 lbs a week!

Out of 40 different sausages at Dittmer’s, our new Oktoberfest Bierwurst became our #4 best seller!

Made with Märzen b**r, this sausage was a new creation for Oktoberfest, and it sold more than we expected. Customers have even asked if we would make it year-round!

Today we're making and smoking our last batch for the season.

Thank you to everyone who gave our new sausage a try and helped make it such a success!

“PUT STEVE IN!”
Back in the early ‘70s, we’d walk our dog around the neighborhood, and my dad would have short conversations with our neighbor, Steve Spurrier, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.
But I wonder if Steve ever knew what was happening at our house!
The 49ers kept losing, and my dad would be yelling at our old TV, in his heavy German accent:
“PUT STEVE IN!”
To dad, it was just common sense. Why keep losing game after game when a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback was sitting on the bench?
I can still picture him.

Before there was Dittmer’s, there was my dad making sausage at home.
In the 1960’s and early ‘70s, my parents would have German friends over the for house parties- German food, German drinks, lots of dancing, and Dad’s homemade sausage.
He had a small hand-cranked sausage machine, so he couldn’t make a lot. He would make some extra for his friends.
And they loved it. They would ask him to make more and buy the extra sausage from him because the German sausages Dittmer was making simply weren’t available on the Bay Area.
The interesting part is that the demand was already there before Dittmer’s was even a business. Those friends knew what my dad could make— and they wanted more. Eventually, that interest helped lead to something much bigger.
That’s a Dittmer’s story.

Our Oktoberfest Bier Wurst started as a 25-lb test batch and went on to sell 100 lbs in its first week — a first for one of our new seasonal sausages.

We sold out… so we made another 100 lbs. 😂

The Hannover Wurst has a little Dittmer’s history behind it, too. Years ago, my father made this German-style sausage at the request of the German Consulate in San Francisco.

And our Game Day Sausage brings the red and gold for football season. ❤️💛

Just another busy day at Dittmer’s.
