Remembering Jackie: How Environmental Stress Might Have Pushed Our Big Bear Queen to the Brink🦅💔

As the world continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of Jackie, the beloved Big Bear bald eagle, many of us are searching for answers. While the veterinary team at the Ojai Raptor Center ruled out direct chemical poisoning, like lead, zinc, or rodenticides, the question of how our environment impacts these magnificent birds remains vital.

The truth is, we cannot separate Jackie’s physical illness from the intense psychological stress she experienced in her final weeks. Here is how invisible stress likely played a major role in her tragic decline:

The Weight of the Nesting Season: Jackie was already physically depleted after months of pouring her energy into raising her two recent eaglets, Sandy and Luna.

The July 4th Sensory Overload: While fireworks didn't poison her chemically, the acute terror and loud explosions of the holiday cause massive spikes in cortisol (stress hormones) in wildlife. This intense fear response severely suppresses a bird's immune system, making it nearly impossible for their bodies to fight off underlying infections or chronic illnesses.

A Lethal Chain Reaction: Weakened by the demanding season and the terrifying stress of the holiday weekend, Jackie’s physical reserves were completely drained. This vulnerability is ultimately what left her unable to defend herself during a territorial dispute with two younger eagles on July 17.

Jackie’s passing is a stark, powerful reminder that wildlife doesn't just suffer from physical wounds or poisons. Psychological distress, environmental disruption, and sensory overload do invisible, lethal damage to already-vulnerable animals.

As we remember Jackie's incredible legacy, let's continue to advocate for quieter, safer spaces for the wildlife that shares our home. Rest easy, Queen Jackie. 🌲✨ BearValley

Columbus did not ‘discover’ America.

Today, Adam and I acknowledge the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional caretakers of the land of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands) on which we reside. We pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.

The Laurel Canyon area was inhabited by the Tongva people, for thousands of years. The spring-fed stream, still present today, flowed year-round providing water for centuries of her people.

For Indigenous People’s Day I hope that you take a moment to remember and pay respect to our land’s true people and respect the land of our ancestors on which we all sit and reap the benefits of.

I pay respect to my own Family of indigenous ancestors who originated in the area now known as South Texas and Chihuahua Mexico, and whom were some of the first to migrate and relocate to the San Gabriel Valley region for work at the turn of the last century.

Unless you are 100% native or descendants of slaves, we are all immigrants, political and religious refugees or conquistadors who ultimately pillaged this land for its resources and displaced her peoples to some of the most remote corners of the country. Take a moment to respect the original borders of this continent on which we now occupy.

Although we cannot change the past what we can do is to respect these lands of Mother Earth and fight for the restoration of her health.

Spotify has some incredible indigenous music channels today that I implore you all to take the time to listen, light some incense, and during these turbulent times, remember who are the true owners of this land.

And you wonder why our logo for the farm is a chicken riding a goat!? Yes it really happens around here! Look closely. Green eggs (Chicken) is sitting atop Trixie (our pregnant mama) on The Goat Bridge to Nowhere, while Ginger relaxes on her favorite perch (the front gate) as everyone gets settled for bed. Sweet dreams everyone...Just another day here in LC.
