RootDown LA Root Down LA empowers youth to become leaders through healthy food ventures in the communities.

We do in hours what nutrition education has been trying to do for years, we get kids & adults to eat their veggies. Root Down LA (RDLA) is a youth-led non-profit organization in South Los Angeles that trains and employs young people to develop social enterprises that deepen residents’ own stake in their community and reinforce a healthy food culture that inspires all neighborhood residents to grow, cook and eat more healthy food. Invest in youth who invest in their community and help us build the foundation for youth driven entrepreneurship, and South LA job growth opportunities!

¡Hola, amiga/os! 🥕

Hello friends 🧡

Welcome a new addition to our team 👏 Jovana Smith 💚 she is our Advisory Board Partnerships and Engagement.

"As a South Central Los Angeles native, I've always been passionate about food and the role it plays in bringing people together. My educational journey led me to earn degrees in Psychology, Global Studies, and Education, with the goal of supporting first-generation, low-income, and disabled students as they pursued higher education and created opportunities for themselves.

My path eventually led me into food entrepreneurship, where I built a charcuterie and grazing business centered around creating meaningful experiences through food. Along the way, I began to recognize how disconnected I grew up, where the food comes from and how deeply food impacts our physical, mental, and community well-being.

What draws me to RootDown LA is its commitment to educating, empowering, and investing in local communities through food. I believe every child should have the opportunity to learn how food is grown, understand the connection between nutrition and health, and see entrepreneurship as a pathway to create change in their own neighborhoods. By combining education, gardening, community engagement, and youth leadership, RootDown LA is helping build a healthier and more self-sustaining future for South Los Angeles, and I am excited to contribute to that mission."

Back to School Season!

As we welcome the students back next week! We also modify our hours from summer. Make your way down to the garden to enjoy some respite from the concrete jungle. Here you can volunteer, stay cool in the shade or read a book from our little library.
