The Cityfarm

The Cityfarm The City Farm Market Garden The Cityfarm is a small, family run, acre parcel with free range poultry, sheep, fruit trees and vegetables. We now have St.

We provide fresh eggs and meat to Northeast Los Angeles residents. The Cityfarm Market Garden was founded in 2003 with the impending birth of our daughter, Malia. Her arrival profoundly changed the way we looked at food. We chose then, as a family, to start being more aware of how our food comes to our table. It started with fruit trees and vegetables and somehow chickens seemed like a natural nex

t step. Ducks soon followed and turkeys after that. Croix sheep, rabbits, Coturnix quail and a Kunekune pig. Still hoping for bees and geese at some point! It would seem logical to move to the country but my wife and I both have deep roots in Northeast LA having spent our entire lives here. Most of our families are in Los Angeles and we wanted our kids to grow up in the city that we love, with its rich diversity and culture. So we decided to stay put and bring some of the country to us.

Hey, Everyone! We will have some stewing hens and stewing ducks available at the Altadena Farmers' Market tomorrow. This is our once a year culling of our older birds in the laying flock. These birds are perfect for soup or to make tamales. Hope the end of the year is going well. See you all tomorrow!

Hey Everyone! We've been out of the fb loop forever but wanted to let you know we have some Heritage breed turkeys for sale for thanksgiving. We will likely slaughter Wednesday morning. Red bourbons, jersey buffs and 1 blue slate between 8-15 lbs and soy free. Message me for more info if you are interested. Hope everyone is well! Thanks!

Just a quick message to let everyone know we will not be at Altadena in any form today. If eggs pick up we may return but it looks like our season is over early. We will be back at some point with fresh poultry: chicken, duck and turkey. Thanks!

Sorry all, for being away from FB. Transitioning P-Chan was more difficult than I anticipated and made me take a hard look at my beliefs regarding the eating of meat. I have come out with my beliefs intact and a deeper understanding of the sacrifices of our farm animals though I am not ready to share my experience yet.
I have also started teaching an English class at the local HS and have been unable to make the farmers markets. The birds are also slowing down due to the change in daylight.

Luis will be at Altadena again today. Please tell him hi. He has been such a breath of fresh air, allowing me to ease up on at least one responsibility and to gain some sanity back in our schedules and our lives at home. We had been burning the candle on both ends at least. Do candles have more than 2 ends cause it sure felt like it for a while.
I will see you all soon. Thank you for the continuing support. I will respond to the messages and comments as I can.

Our 'Wonderful' pomegranates are a little early but they're telling us it's time. The fruit of the underworld announces the coming of fall and the start of our season of harvesting. This will be a hard week at The Cityfarm with ducks, chickens and our pig, P-Chan, being slaughtered. While the fall and winter in Southern California are brimming with life, our year end tasks of culling and harvesting do make it seem that even here, Demeter weeps for Persephone and awaits her return from Hades.

Altadena Farmers' Market today! Hope to see you there. A bit late on the share but check out local chef and market supporter Paul Ragan's restaurant AltaEats! Paul does wonderful things with our duck eggs. AltaEats was featured in the LA Times food blog! Congratulations, Paul!
