My latest adventure through Southeast Asia taught me three things...

1️⃣ I'm a certified adventurous eater after trying a fermented fish stew & munching on insects in Cambodia.

2️⃣ The Singapore Sling is the perfect cocktail to help escape the oppressive humidity.

3️⃣ Croissants can be made using Mekong River W**d, and I somewhat prefer it to a traditional butter croissant!

Read part two of my adventures through Singapore, Laos, and Cambodia now at BrainDocsFoodBlog.com, and stay tuned for my upcoming stop in Vietnam!

🇪🇸 Welcome, or should I say "bienvenido," to Restaurante Arrayanes. This gem, tucked away in the Albaicín district of Granada in Spain, truly lives up to the hype.

Before you decide to come at me for indulging in Moroccan cuisine in Spain, you should know that the region is known for its abundance of Moroccan influence, and it shows! If your favorite restaurant is full of 'shared plates,' maybe you should thank the Moroccans 🧐

Dessert first? Dessert always! Bar Chelou in Pasadena has some of my favorite sweet bites in the city. And while it IS National Pie Day, we're taking a few liberties - who's to say their banana bar isn't a pie? It's got a crisp crust, caramelized bananas, and chocolate/caramel mousse. Sounds like pie to me!

Any meal here is entirely incomplete without dessert - make sure you try them out!

Some beautiful highlights from my visit to Bar Chelou in Pasadena. With all the devastation caused by last week's fires, I want to showcase them once again, as they are currently doing amazing work helping to feed displaced residents and volunteers who have come from all over the country and beyond to help those in need.

If you know of an organization in need of meals for volunteers, please email [email protected] for more info. If you have the means to do so, please consider donating to one or more of the fantastic organizations helping to bring comfort to those who have been displaced. The LAFD Foundation, World Central Kitchen, Pasadena Humane Society, and many more deserving organizations desperately need our help.

🥖 Burrata Toast with Paleta Ibérica & Pickled Peppers 🥖
An incredibly well-balanced bite and a perfect way to kick off your meal. The soft and mild burrata and piquant peppers perfectly complement the intense flavors of the ham.

🇫🇷 French Breakfast Radish 🇫🇷
With a mild, peppery flavor and crisp texture, this appetizer is topped with fromage blanc, furikake, black & white sesame seeds, and finally finished with a sprinkle of herbs. A perfectly balanced dish with earthiness, briny acidity, and nutty depth.

🐟 Anchovies with Peppers 🐟
Rich anchovies are paired with pickled peppers - very European, and very delicious. A simple dish that allows the quality of the ingredients to shine through.

🐖 Ibérico Pork Chop 🐖
With apologies to Babe, this perfectly cooked chop is paired with cabbage, the newly-popularized fennel pollen, and a dusting of furikake. The chop is golden brown, and the cabbage pairs well with the richness of the meat.

🦆 Duck Leg 🦆
"Fusion" dishes can sometimes catch a lot of flack (quack) but this one passes with flying colors. Okay, enough with the puns. Served on a bed of Yu Choy couscous, spicy labneh, and macadamia dukkah, this dish combines flavors from China, the Middle East, and North Africa. It's a delightfully intense bite, and the creamy labneh and nutty dukkah add a delightful zest and crunch.

Brain Doc NEVER gets paid for his unbiased reviews, but he also won't pass up an opportunity to dine at a restaurant where his close friend’s daughter works as a pastry chef.

While dessert was on my mind as I entered Bar Chelou in Pasadena, the entire menu should truly be explored by someone with a refined palate such as mine.

From the appetizers, to the main event and the desserts, flavors from each corner of the globe trotted around each corner of my mouth. Highlights include heirloom radish, Ibérico pork chop, confit duck leg, and of course, the phenomenal dessert selection.

Read up on every dish in my latest entry at BrainDocsFoodBlog.com.

Los Angeles has some of the best Mexican food in the world - point blank period. From Michelin-starred restaurants to your local taco stand slicing al pastor straight off the trompo, it’s hard to find BAD Mexican food out here.

One of my favorite spots is Cilantro Mexican Grill. It’s hidden inside a Chevron station in North Hollywood, where the food is, as the kids would say, ‘gas’.

This unassuming hangout serves some of the best burritos you can get your hands on. My personal choice, the shrimp burrito, is overstuffed with perfectly cooked shrimp, and tastefully accompanied by the standard rice, beans, guacamole, onions, cilantro, and salsa, striking the perfect balance of flavor and texture.

And don’t miss out on the exquisite tortas. I went with the carnitas, which is perfectly slow-cooked, juicy, tender, and flavorful. Their house-made cilantro pesto adds to the harmonious flavor profiles seen across the menu.

Have you checked this place out? Where’s your favorite Mexican spot? Let me know in the comments!

🥩 If you’re going to blow a paycheck on a steak dinner, shouldn’t it be good?

Yours truly would argue yes, especially after having dined at the prestigious Lucky’s & Dear John’s. So when an opportunity arose to have a birthday dinner at BLVD Steak in Sherman Oaks, I pounced.

A restaurant that aims to compete with the likes of Cut & Mastro’s has a lot to live up to, and BLVD simply did not. While the wedge salad and waffle fries were great, the stars of the show decided to stay home. The shrimp cocktail was disappointing, and my steak, a very tender ribeye cap, was overcooked before being replaced.

BLVD steak is carried by the supporting cast. It’s not what you should expect from a restaurant trying to wiggle its way into the ultra-competitive fine-dining zeitgeist. If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable steakhouse experience, stick to the big guns.

My full review, as always, can be found on my website at braindocsfoodblog.com/blvd-steak

When it comes to iconic LA steakhouses, Musso & Frank is the first to come to mind for many Angelenos. The place has been around for more than a century, serving juicy steaks and crisp martinis to Hollywood's elite and working class alike.

That said, the food itself is almost irrelevant. Yes, it's delicious, but you're stepping into a living, breathing tribute to Hollywood. Red leather booths, truly professional waiters - many of whom have been working there for decades, and bartenders that have perfected every classic cocktail under the sun, and then some.

This is one review I've written where I could care less about the food, but if it was bad, don't you think they would have shut their doors sometime in the past 105 years?

What are some other iconic steakhouses in LA? Let me know, and check out my 'review' of Musso & Frank at braindocsfoodblog.com/musso-frank-grill

✈️🇮🇹 I’ve been abroad and it’s great to be back! My latest review brings us to the Tuscan city of Sansepolcro, where we dined at Ristorante Fiorentino.

I must warn you, I’m a bit biased - the restaurant has been owned by my wife’s family since it opened in 1807. With that out of the way, on to the food.

The antipasti was plentiful and all the staples were present. From prosciutto, cappicola, and salami to Tuscan cheeses, olive oils, and tartare - all were all enjoyed as we whet our palates for dinner.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a meal in Italy without some handmade pasta. And to top it all off, a gorgeous steak served with a variety of sauces and a side of fried potatoes.

Clearly, I could go on for a while…and I did in my full review. Check it out at braindocsfoodblog.com/ristorante-fiorentino or the
